Publication number: 20040160182Abstract: A low-pressure discharge lamp is described having a base housing (10), a discharge vessel (2), whose end sections are fixed to an end section of the base housing, and a contact-making system for making electrical contact with the lamp, which is located on the end section of the base housing (10) which is remote from the discharge vessel, a conductive section (5) being provided, which is electrically connected to the contact-making system and is arranged adjacent to the discharge vessel (2) in the base housing (10) in such a way that an electrical short circuit is formed around the discharge vessel (2). This makes it possible to reduce the starting voltage of the lamp. As an alternative, or in addition, to this, the cross section of the web attachments is increased, which also increases the rate of the luminous-flux run-up.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 17, 2004Publication date: August 19, 2004Inventors: Achim Hilscher, Thomas Noll

Patent number: 6720718Abstract: An efficient and safe lamp with a tungsten halogen capsule may be formed by using a two stage pyrophoric fuse as part of the electrical path to the capsule. The thin walled lamp with tungsten halogen capsule and two stage pyrophoric fuse yields a more efficient, less expensive and yet still safe tungsten halogen lamp. The thin walled lamp with tungsten halogen capsule and pyrophoric fuse provides a safe, thin walled outer envelope tungsten halogen lamp, provide a lamp with an oxygen sensitive fuse operable in low wattage lamps, provides a method manufacturing a pyrophoric fuse sensitive to moderate temperatures, provides an inexpensive and practical, low wattage, thin walled tungsten halogen lamp with a pyrophoric fuse.Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 2001Date of Patent: April 13, 2004Assignee: Osram Sylvania Inc.Inventors: Carl Douglas Trent, Jeffrey Paul Buschmann, Michael R. Patent number: 6709130Abstract: The invention relates to a double-filament halogen incandescent lamp for a motor vehicle headlamp. In order to reduce the light shading effects caused by the filament holder, at least one of the power supply wires (8) is provided with a section (8a) that projects out of the common plane of the power supply wires (7, 8, 9) and is guided past the main filament (5), this section (8a) being shaped such that light beams that are emitted by the main filament (5) perpendicular to its filament axis are not obstructed by the power supply wire (8).Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2002Date of Patent: March 23, 2004Assignee: Pätent-Treuhand-Gesellschaft fuer elektrische Gluehlampen mbHInventors: Gerhard Behr, Peter Helbig, Christian Seichter

Patent number: 6677260Abstract: The present invention is directed at a family of glasses capable of absorbing UV radiation and filtering yellow light in the visible region of the spectrum, the family of glasses having a composition consisting essentially, in terms of weight percent on the oxide basis, of: 55-95.7% SiO2, 0-28% B2O3, 0.5-18% Al2O3, 0-4% SrO, 0-13% BaO, 0-13% CaO, 0-8% MgO, 0-7.5% Na2O, 0-9.5% K2O, 0-1.5% Li2O, 0-1.5% Sb2O3, 0.4-4.5% Nd2O3, and 0.1-1% CeO2. Glasses of the present invention are capable of employment as envelopes for tungsten-halogen lamps and other high temperature light sources, as well as sealed-beam incandescent headlights. Also, the glasses can be used as for other applications where high contrast and enhanced visible properties of transmitted or reflected visible light can be a benefit, such as opthalmic glass, computer screens with enhanced contrast properties, or glass hosts for lasers.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2001Date of Patent: January 13, 2004Assignee: Corning IncorporatedInventors: Richard H. Publication number: 20030209981Abstract: Generally, improvements are provided to the safety and other characteristics of a miniature lamp including several related to the possible reduction of the occurrence of electrocution, serious electric shock, and/or fire hazards that may be caused by the crushing of the glass envelope surrounding the internal components of the lamp and the related exposure of full-line voltage to the environment. These improvement include the locating of a bypass shunt below an insulator bead, and the use of an enlarged insulator bead that not only provides protection for the bypass shunt but also provides better filament and conductor centering within the envelope of the lamp, which not only provides a safer lamp but also a lamp having a longer lamp life. Furthermore, other embodiments describe other methods of increasing proper shunt action by minimizing the likelihood of a short circuit forming above the insulator bead.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 9, 2002Publication date: November 13, 2003Inventor: James W. Publication number: 20030164683Abstract: A decoration lamp bulb for Christmas use comprises a lamp bulb body in which a tungsten filament lampwick is mounted within the lamp bulb body, and two poles connecting legs being drawn out from two ends of tungsten filament lampwick, and a vacuum sealing state being maintained within the lamp bulb body by a primary evacuating operation; a outer enclosure within which said lamp bulb body is packaged, and two-poles connecting legs extended from said bulb body, and a vacuum state being maintained within the outer enclosure by a secondary evacuating operation. Thus, the vacuum layer of the outer enclosure can segregate the heat conduction from the tungsten filament lamp surface. Therefore, the brightness can be made higher by the raising of electric current value with better safety and longer service life.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 5, 2002Publication date: September 4, 2003Inventor: Hung-Huei Cheng
