    Abstract: Circuitry utilizing either composite sync or separated sync data provides self-stepping capability for the vertical scan of a CRT alphanumeric display. A counter counts horizontal sync pulses for varying the vertical scan rate between rows of characters in steps, and is synchronized with the beginning of each frame by the vertical sync pulse. Alphanumeric data can be displayed with any desired spacing between rows without change of character format and with minimum effect on the size of the displayed characters.

    Abstract: The inner arc tube of some jacketed discharge lamps transmits ultraviolet radiation which is normally absorbed without harm by the glass outer envelope but may be released should the outer envelope be broken off. This is prevented by a fuse heater and shunting thermal switch connected in series with the arc tube and located within the outer envelope. Should the outer envelope be broken, air cools the switch so that it opens. Current flow through the heater now raises its temperature and causes it to oxidize, thereby opening the circuit and disabling the lamp.

    Abstract: Intensifier tubes for x-rays or low-light levels form an image of photoelectrons which is focused on a fluorescent viewing screen. Stray magnetic fields, including the earth's field, bend the electron trajectories and distort the image. Magnetic shielding has been used around the tube, leaving the image-receiving end open. Magnetic field leaking through the open end is reduced by extending the end of the shield around the image-receiving aperture inward and forward of the edge of the tube.
