  • Patent number: 6237418
Abstract: Method and apparatus by which misshapen crown caps on beverage containers, such as bottles traveling along high-speed bottling lines, may be detected. Bottles are arranged to travel directly beneath a magnetic proximity sensor head placed at a station along a conveyor. A photodetector indicates when a crown cap is properly positioned with respect to the magnetic proximity sensor. In the presence of a crown cap, the sensor head generates a signal having characteristic shapes indicative of properly shaped caps or those that are misshapen. The signal is monitored via algorithms for the presence of the characteristic shapes anticipated for properly shaped and misshapen crown caps and commands are generated in response to detecting reject crown caps.

  • Patent number: 6067857
Abstract: A processing arrangement for a brake element for a vehicle employs a rotational support, such as a precision collet arrangement, for supporting the brake element rotatably about a fixed axis of rotation. The brake element and the spindle are rotated by a drive arrangement that causes the brake element to rotate about the axis of rotation while a rotary encoder that is coupled to the drive arrangement produces a rotation data signal containing rotational information responsive to the rotation of the brake element. Residual unbalances are measured by the production of an unbalance data signal that is responsive to forces that are themselves responsive to a residual unbalance of the brake element. In addition, a surface dimension detector produces a surface dimension data electrical signal that is responsive to a dimensional characteristic of a surface of the brake element.

  • Patent number: 6064201
Abstract: Small metallic patches embedded in a mainly non-metallic surface may be detected and mapped by placing a wire coil at the free end of a cantilever, with a fine tip made of a ferro-magnetic material located at its center. An alternating current is passed through the coil so that when it is near a metallic patch eddy currents are induced in the patch. These produce a small magnetic moment in the patch which pulls the tip towards the surface. This movement of the tip is detected by observing a light beam that is reflected off the surface of the cantilever. By plotting the output of a photodetector, sensistive to small changes in the reflected beam's position, as a function of the tip's location over the surface, a map of the metallic patches is produced.

An induction member is mounted to the housing and surrounds the aperture for generating an output voltage in response to the presence of a metal object near the induction member. A mechanism is provided for calibrating the induction member by comparing the output voltage to a reference voltage to establish a threshold voltage which is unaffected by transient fluctuations in the output voltage. A mechanism is also provided in the housing and spaced about the aperture for selectively sensing an object passing through the aperture. The sensing mechanism generates a detection signal in response to passage of an object through the aperture only upon activation of the sensing mechanism. A mechanism activates the sensing mechanism upon generation of an inductive member output voltage above the threshold voltage. Finally, a device is provided for triggering an alarm in response to the generation of the detection signal.

  • Patent number: 5552703
Abstract: An elongate vessel, preferably cylindrical, is partially filled with a conductive and/or ferromagnetic fluid. At least two coils are wound on the vessel in longitudinally different regions so that tilting the vessel varies the amount of the fluid inside the coils differently. This affects their inductances. The variation in inductances is monitored, directly or indirectly, e.g. by applying an AC signal to the coils and monitoring the voltage drops across them. This provides an electrical output related to the inclination of the sensor's axis. It is unaffected by rotation about the axis. Thus the sensor can be used to monitor the orientation of the axis of a drilling tool, e.g. a mole, which rotates about its axis.
