  • Patent number: 9970743
Abstract: An attachable retainer for mounting on the L-shaped catch assembly of flexible tape is provided. The attachable retainer provides a pear-shaped base plate having peripheral sidewalls defining a lower holding area for receiving flimsy workpieces that would not afford sufficient resistance needed to extend the flexible tape relative to its housing. A curved opening in the base plate receives the catch assembly, while two prongs and a horizontal brace over the curved opening and a tongue element just below the curved opening removably secure the catch assembly. A plurality of teeth provided by the sidewalls enable the attachment retainer to be used on conventional and unconventional workpieces without the need to remove the attachable retainer.

  • Patent number: 9617682
Abstract: A template, such as a quilting template, is configured as a relatively thin piece of material having a first circular portion disposed at a first end of the template and a second circular portion disposed at a second end of the template. The template further includes a concave curve portion disposed between the first end and the second end along a first side edge of the template, a linear curve portion disposed between the first end and the second end along a second side edge of the template, and a set of guide markings. In use, a user can utilize the template to cut, for example, heart-shaped, flower-shaped, or leave-shaped elements, from a piece of material. With such a configuration, the template allows the user to cut a variety of differently sized and shaped elements directly from the material, without requiring the creation of multiple patterns.

  • Patent number: 6591511
Abstract: An improved framing square having integral features for automating the marking and cutting of angles. The square contains two sliding carriages—one in the body and one in the blade. Each carriage has a deployable pin. In order to set an angle, the user first deploys the pins in each sliding carriage so that they protrude downward from the square. Next, the user sets the sliding carriage in the body to the desired position and locks it in place. The user then sets the sliding carriage in the blade to the desired position and locks it in place. The two pins protruding from the sliding carriages are then butted against the board to be cut. Once they are in place, the blade of the square will form the correct cutting angle across the board. Since many common cuts employ a twelve inch base leg, the invention includes another feature: Rather than set the sliding carriage within the body to twelve inches, the user may opt instead to deploy a fixed pin located in the body at the twelve inch position.

  • Patent number: 6519868
Abstract: A photographic mounting system correlates photographs with height by providing a vertically mountable ruler configured to adjustably receive and hold photograph frames at various adjustably selected heights on the ruler. The frames, in turn, hold the photographs, thus allowing placement of the photographs at selected heights on the ruler. Various locking mechanisms are disclosed to secure the frames to the ruler and prevent inadvertent or unauthorized removal. Also disclosed is a virtual equivalent of the physical system, the virtual equivalent having a greater variety of possible modifications and a greater amount of information linked to various growth indicia.

Abstract: A device for measuring and marking lines and points on a steel I-beam includes a rib for contacting the outside of an I-beam flange along a line opposite the center of the beam web, a measuring blade that rests on the beam web and measures distances from the outside of the flange, and a bridge for connecting the measuring blade to the rib in a way in which the measuring blade is held perpendicular to the flange. The device marks I-beams faster and more accurately that was possible using prior art tools and techniques.

  • Patent number: 6470586
Abstract: A simplified light weight squaring tool used by pipe fitters in conjunction with templates or pipe fitters tables for laying out pipe intersect angles and geometry as required for cutting and joining pipe of various sizes at various angles. A rugged tool intended primarily for on sight use, comprises a self centering straight edge arranged for guiding and scribing of lines on flat surfaces, curved surfaces or across the diameter of a pipe face, an integral adjustable protractor level, allowing for fast and accurate perpendicular and angular orientation of the straight edge when used in the vertical plane and a self aligning extension arranged for expanding the capacity of the squaring tool and transcribing angular lines from the ace of pipe sections onto the circumference or outside diameter of pipe parallel to longitudinal centerline of the pipe as required for layout.

  • Patent number: 6253771
Abstract: A comb-like device is useful in the measurement of hair thickness and density in order to determine the extent and/or degree of hair loss or thinning as well as hair regeneration if undergoing treatment therefore. The comb section or teeth are modified into a plurality of different sized tines for measuring hair depth and thickness while the handle is tapered and calibrated for measuring any increase or decrease in the size of the individual's part. The handle is further modified through the incorporation of a magnifying glass for visual inspection of the individual's hair and scalp. The device is primarily designed for women.

  • Patent number: 6217077
Abstract: The invention is of a kit or system useful for guiding and facilitating the taking, tabulation and processing of measurements as pertain to scoring game animal according to established scoring rules. The kit or system includes a flexible cable which is used to record absolute lengths or distances needed for a proper scoring. The cable lacks cumulative length indicia or unit indications, but rather includes equally spaced incremental indicia which are used (by multiplying the number of indicia as rest between measurement endpoints) as part of the ultimate determination of length according to standard measurement units. A reusable score card is also provided which includes spaces for recording measurements and indicia for indicating the proper measurements to be taken as well as the sequence thereof and prescribed calculations to be made therefrom.

  • Patent number: 6067719
Abstract: A ruler device for eliciting judgements about the ratio of factors includes a first base member having first indicia indicating the ratio of factors, and a second base member slidably mounted to the first base member. The second base member moves longitudinally along the first base member, and has second indicia indicating an optical weighing of the factors. The second indicia is adjacent with the first indicia and alignable with respect thereto by relative movement of the first and second base members with respect to each other. When the second indicia are aligned with the first indicia in accordance with a predetermined manner, a value of the ratio of the factors is determined therefrom.
