  • Patent number: 8782912
Abstract: A tool for carpentry that when used with a nail, a pencil, and a tape measure can draw circles and arcs from a radius of 1 inch up to that of the length of the tape measure. It can also easily make circles or arcs with a radius of 2 inches up to 12 inches using pencil guide holes that are staggered down the length of the device at one eighth-inch intervals. The tool has two rare earth magnets that hold the tape measure to the tool during use. The magnets can be used also to hold a nail on the tool for storage purposes. In that way, a nail is always available when a circle is needed. For more convenience, one or more bubble levels can be added to the tool making the tool not only a circle tool but a torpedo level as well.

  • Patent number: 8747244
Abstract: A putt break visualization instrument useful for improving putting includes an elongated object such as a crossbar that extends from the shaft of a putter and is normal thereto. The golfer begins by addressing the golf ball. The golfer then holds the putter above the green by the handle in the manner of a plumb line so that the shaft of the putter is vertically oriented and the crossbar is horizontally oriented. The golfer then aligns the shaft with the uphill edge of the golf ball and moves the shaft up or down along the vertical so that the crossbar extends in proximity to the cup. The golfer may use a slider on the crossbar to mark the cup. The golfer may now evaluate how well he or she has addressed the golf ball, and either repeat the process if improvement is needed or make the putt.

Abstract: Apparatuses are provided for various tools that incorporate materials with a high coefficient of friction and a low coefficient of friction. The materials with a low coefficient of friction may be mounted on a tool and have a perpendicular movement to the tool. This perpendicular movement may be implemented with a spring mechanism. The materials with a high coefficient of friction may be mounted on the tool in a fixed position. The tool may be pressed against a surface, first engaging the materials with a low coefficient of friction. The tool may freely move across the surface while the materials with a low coefficient of friction maintain contact with the surface. As the tool is continually pressed to the surface, the materials with a high coefficient of friction subsequently make contact with the surface, thereby causing the lateral movement of the tool with respect to the surface to be restricted and stabilized. An example of the tool may be a spirit or carpenter level.

  • Patent number: 6591511
Abstract: An improved framing square having integral features for automating the marking and cutting of angles. The square contains two sliding carriages—one in the body and one in the blade. Each carriage has a deployable pin. In order to set an angle, the user first deploys the pins in each sliding carriage so that they protrude downward from the square. Next, the user sets the sliding carriage in the body to the desired position and locks it in place. The user then sets the sliding carriage in the blade to the desired position and locks it in place. The two pins protruding from the sliding carriages are then butted against the board to be cut. Once they are in place, the blade of the square will form the correct cutting angle across the board. Since many common cuts employ a twelve inch base leg, the invention includes another feature: Rather than set the sliding carriage within the body to twelve inches, the user may opt instead to deploy a fixed pin located in the body at the twelve inch position.

  • Patent number: 6463666
Abstract: A measuring and leveling device constructed with bubble vials for leveling which are movable to the precise point of application, with the measuring scale situated on a surface so constructed as to allow the scale to be located directly against and parallel to the surface to be measured. The device serves for both measuring and leveling tasks in one tool, and is constructed including a body portion provided with a ruler for measuring distances between points, in which the measuring scale is marked on a surface which tapers to a flat edge as in a conventional ruler. The body portion has two parallel tracks along its longitudinal axis, and two clamps situated on the body of the leveling device, each of which is held in place by tabs situated on the underside of the clamps and insertable into the parallel tracks, each clamp including a bubble vial mounting portion into which a bubble vial is fixedly mounted.

  • Patent number: 6393710
Abstract: A combination tape measure and straight edge apparatus includes a first straight edge segment which includes an outer edge and an inner edge which includes first hinge members. A tape measure assembly support unit includes second hinge members that engage the first hinge members. A tape measure assembly is provided, and a connector is provided for attaching the tape measure assembly to the tape measure assembly support unit. The second hinge members of the tape measure assembly support unit permit the tape measure assembly support unit and the attached tape measure assembly to be rotated around the first hinge members so that the tape measure assembly can selectively be moved to and from a storage orientation and a plurality of in-use orientations. A second straight edge segment and a third straight edge segment form an isosceles right triangle along with the first straight edge segment. The tape measure assembly support unit includes riser members which support the second hinge members.

  • Patent number: 6260283
Abstract: A multi-functional carpentry tool includes a base plate having opposed front and back major surfaces, and at least one side edge bearing surface perpendicular to the front and back surfaces. A pivot ruler is secured to the base plate and extends across and parallel to the front major surface and outwardly from the base plate. The pivot ruler includes an elongated marking member having opposing straight side edges. A longitudinal slot is formed in the marking member parallel to and between the opposed side edges of the marking member. A pivot attachment device is received through the slot of the marking member and into the base plate for pivotably attaching the marking member to the base plate. The marking member is slidable across the front major surface of the base plate a distance equal to the length of the slot.

Abstract: A sighting assembly for providing a reference laser beam in the course of connecting pipe segments to each other includes an elongate body in which a laser pointing course is received and which is pivotally engaged at its front end to an straight edged arm. The body may further include a magnetic compass and a level assembly, both proximate its rear end, to provide a visual indication of the azimuth and inclination thereof. These are achieved by an azimuth ring on the compass projecting into lateral cutouts in the body for manipulative convenience. In one example the arm supports two spaced posts, each including spaced projections for contacting the pipe segment, and when the arm is collapsed below the body for storage the posts are received in the cutouts.

The tool is also used in conjunction with a straightedge or a rule to function as a compass, and is most often used in pairs. A scribe means is removably inserted into the body of the tool. The tool includes a clamping means with smooth surfaces to affix the scribe/guide tool to another cooperating tool. A clamp element is moved up and down relative to the main body via a screw drive. Position indicating edges of the main body of the tool are tapered to a very narrow point to reduce the possibility of accumulated error when marking a workpiece with the tool as a guide.
