  • Patent number: 7204035
Abstract: A piston rod is guided with freedom of axial movement in a cylinder, where the position of the piston rod is detected by a first position-measuring device, which travels along with the piston rod, and by a second position-measuring device on the cylinder side. The two position-measuring devices are radially adjacent and axially parallel, and are supported in such a way that they cannot rotate with respect to each other.

  • Patent number: 6506143
Abstract: In a finishing apparatus, a plurality of works are retained at distances from each other in a direction of an X-axis. A single spindle is disposed on a table movable in the direction of the X-axis, the spindle has an axis parallel to an axis of each of bores to be finished, and is capable of being advanced and retracted axially. A measuring device is provided that measures an inside diameter of each finished bore and which is advanced and retracted independently from the spindle in a direction along the axis of each finished bore. A combination tool is mounted at a tip end of the spindle and finishes an inner surface of any of the bores to be finished, even if the position of insertion of the combination tool into each of the bores is changed.

  • Patent number: 6003238
Abstract: A method for pre-positioning the driveshaft sections of an axially adjustable driveshaft assembly prior to installation within a vehicle to facilitate the installation process. An installation tool is provided with first and second members which are movable relative to one another. Reference indicia are provided on one or both of the members such that mounting surfaces provided thereon can be spaced apart from one another by a predetermined amount. The mounting surfaces of the installation tool are mounted on separate sections of the driveshaft assembly. Then, the driveshaft sections are moved relative to one another until the reference indicia provided on the installation tool are properly aligned. When such alignment is achieved, the overall axial length of the driveshaft assembly is approximately equal to the desired length between the engine/transmission assembly and the axle assembly. Then, the installation tool is removed, and the driveshaft assembly is installed in the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 5930908
Abstract: An alignment fixture to rotationally align driveshaft components includes a first driveshaft component having a yoke secured to it, the yoke having opposed arms with openings for receiving universal joint bearings, with the openings being aligned on a yoke axis, and wherein a cross with bearing cups is mounted within the yoke, with the bearing cups being positioned within the yoke arm openings, and wherein the first driveshaft component has splines for transmitting torque, and wherein a second driveshaft component has splines for interengagement with the splines of the first driveshaft component in a slip joint, the second driveshaft component having an alignment mark indicative of angular orientation with respect to a universal joint yoke fixed to the second driveshaft component. The fixture includes a main body having a concave surface for positive contact with the first driveshaft component.

  • Patent number: 5873173
Abstract: A device for measuring length and vertical clearance of engine connecting rods comprising a base which is attached to an upstanding member in a hinged fashion. A vertical guide slot of substantial length is disposed within the upstanding member along a longitudinal center axis and distal to the base. A wrist pin mandrel comprising a guide slot receiving member is disposed on the upstanding member such that said guide slot receiving member is engaged in the vertical guide slot. Positioned at the top of the upstanding member is a dial indicator within a mount. A plunger projecting downward from said dial indicator rests upon the top of the mandrel's guide slot receiving member. Proximally to the base of the measuring surface is a standard mount which engages a standard. The standard is vertically slidable and adapted to be locked at adjusted elevations within said mount.

  • Patent number: 5814724
Abstract: A device and a method for determining big end bearing and wrist pin bearing wear in a piston engine without complete disassembly of the engine. The device includes a probe rod which moves in response to the movements of the piston in a cylinder being tested. The position of the probe rod is transduced to an electrical signal which is inputted to a microcomputer. The method uses the piston position obtained via the probe rod and the crank throw angle to calculate the total amount of wear in the big end bearing and the wrist pin bearing. The results of the calculation are then sent to a display which forms part of the bearing inspection device of the present invention.

  • Patent number: 5744705
Abstract: The invention relates to a method of, and apparatus for, determining the clearance between wear surfaces of a reciprocating piston engine and the surrounding cylindrical bore of the engine block, without need for physical contact with the piston. As particularly distinguished from the prior art, the present invention employs an energy wave source, collimated to impinge against selectable portions of the piston head either during its reciprocation, or at rest, in the so-called combustion or compression chamber between the moving piston and the engine cylinder. The energy source may be optical, electro-optical, acoustico-optical, or electromagnetic, generating continuous waves or high frequency pulses, or which are capable of reflecting such energy back to a plurality of detectors Such detectors are capable of measuring exceptionally high frequency (short wave lengths) signals to measure time (and hence distance) from the source to the piston head back to the detector.

  • Patent number: 5657545
Abstract: A fixture for identifying the phase angle relationships between two universal joints secured to the ends of a steering shaft assembly includes first and second universal joint assemblies which are connected together by a shaft assembly. The shaft assembly includes a male splitted member which is secured to a first inboard yoke of the first universal joint assembly. The male splined member extends within and cooperates with a female splined member of the shaft assembly. The shaft assembly also includes a hollow cylindrical extension member having a first end which is secured to a second inboard yoke of the second universal joint assembly. The extension member has a second end which is journalled on a reduced diameter end portion of the female splined member. Thus, the extension member and the second universal joint can be rotated relative to the female splined member and the first universal joint assembly.

  • Patent number: 5507100
Abstract: A push rod gauge for finding the optimum length of push rods in a push rod engine. The gauge has a mounting bracket which is affixed to a cylinder head after the rocker arm has been removed, a push rod holding channel is held by the face plate and has measuring marks on its outer surface. A push rod member is placed in the conventional position of a push rod and the cam shaft is turned. The position at which the push rod moves an equal length above and below a zero line mark is noted. A push rod is then adjusted or cut to this preferred length. The device can be used on any engine having push rods.
