  • Patent number: 7401415
Abstract: A measurement tool for determining a position of a pinion gear in a differential assembly includes a mounting member configured to contact an end face of the pinion gear and an elongated arm member extending outwardly from the mounting member. The arm member has an arm portion configured to overlie one of the bearing seats of the differential assembly and an aperture formed in the arm member configured to receive a measurement gage therethrough. The measurement gage is used to measure a distance between a surface of the bearing seat and a reference surface of the arm member from which the position or “pinion depth” of pinion gear can be determined.

  • Patent number: 6928712
Abstract: A method and apparatus for assembling a driveshaft, and the driveshaft itself. The driveshaft (1) includes a first attachable part (2) with a first longitudinal axis (A1), a second attachable part (3) with a second longitudinal axis (A2) as well as a tube element (4) with a curvature which is production-caused. For joining purposes, the tube element (4) is held so as to intersect a reference axis (R) in two points of its center line (M). The first attachable part (2) with its first longitudinal axis (A1) and the second attachable part (3) with its second longitudinal axis (A2) are aligned on the reference axis (R). Thereafter, the attachable parts (2, 3) are welded to the tube ends of the tube element (4), with the radial gaps between the tube element (4) and the attachable parts (2, 3) being closed.

  • Patent number: 6804897
Abstract: Apparatus for use in aligning the differential input shaft of a race car with the transmission output shaft includes a transmission attachment and a differential attachment, each of which is detachably mountable to the race car. Each attachment includes a laser mounted centrally in a plate which is mounted substantially perpendicular to the transmission and the differential respectively. The laser mounted to the transmission emits a light beam coaxial to the transmission output shaft and the laser mounted to the differential emits a light beam coaxial to the differential input shaft. By adjusting the differential and transmission relative to each other such that the laser beams do not intersect, the differential and the transmission are aligned for optimum performance. A camber gauge may be substituted for the laser in either plate to measure the attitude of the differential or the transmission.

  • Patent number: 6151766
Abstract: A method and apparatus for pre-adjusting, prior to engagement of an engine and a transmission, a self-adjusting clutch such as a self-adjusting clutch manufactured by Dana Corporation's Spicer Clutch Division of Auburn, Indiana, known as the Spicer Solo, Adjustment-Free Clutch. The method includes the steps of: a) releasing the clutch pressure to allow the indicator wear tab of the clutch to move; b) positioning an adjustable contact element against the indicator wear tab to limit the movement of the indicator wear tab so as to specifically locate the position of the wear tab and, hence, the position of the release bearing; c) reapplying the clutch pressure; d) taking a reading of the position of the release bearing. Steps a) through d) can be repeated as needed. The adjustable contact element is preferably mounted on a generally U-shape frame having means to attach the frame proximate the clutch and means to adjust the position of the contact element.

  • Patent number: 5562193
Abstract: A method and apparatus for installing and adjusting a clutch assembly in a vehicle is shown and described. In a preferred embodiment, a bracket having a plate that simulates a clutch brake and having a measurement device, is mounted on a flywheel housing in which a clutch assembly having a release bearing is mounted. The measurement device is encased by a cover and securely fixed to the bracket, and measures the distance between the plate and the release bearing. In a preferred embodiment, the measurement device has a slidably movable member that may be extended between an outer surface of the plate and an outer surface of the release bearing, thereby measuring the distance between the two surfaces. In order to ensure that an accurate measurement is made, the measurement device is zeroed when an end surface of the slidably movable member is substantially flush with an outer surface of the plate.
