  • Patent number: 8826557
Abstract: A caliper for measuring the size of an object, especially the thickness of an object with non-planar surfaces. After measured, the caliper can be removed from the object without changing the measured value. The caliper includes a scale ruler, a vernier slidably disposed on the scale ruler, a first jaw fixedly connected to the scale ruler and a second jaw pivotally connected to the vernier. In normal state, the second jaw is kept in a position in alignment with and in parallel to the first jaw, whereby the caliper can be used to measure the object in a common manner. After measured, the second jaw is rotated to another position, permitting the caliper to be removed from the measured object.

Abstract: A brake pad measuring device is designed to be small enough to fit through various suspension components or many vehicles' wheel aperture and still maintain the ability to move in three-dimensions. The device is compact enough so that it may take an accurate reading of the thickness of a brake pad while being between the caliper housing and the brake pad backing plate of a vehicle. The device also comprises a spring so that once it is correctly placed, it may be manipulated in order to automatically get a reading of the thickness of a brake pad to the closest millimeter or 32nd of an inch by releasing the spring to cause a measurement to be automatically taken. Using this device, any user can get quick, reliable measurements for all four sets of brake pads in a matter of minutes and all without having to remove a single wheel from the vehicle.

  • Patent number: 7040151
Abstract: A brake evaluation gauge is useful to determine a brake lining thickness and/or brake drum wear. Depending on the particular embodiment selected, one of a thickness measurement, a percentage of brake life left, a pass or a fail indication may be indicated for the thickness of the brake lining. A first end of a gauge is inserted between a brake shoe table and a brake drum of applied air brakes to provide this reading. Furthermore, a recess in the gauge is placed over a ridge created by wear of the brake lining on the brake drum. If the ridge contacts the interior surface of the recess, then excessive wear of the brake drum is indicated.

  • Patent number: 6357290
Abstract: A wear detection probe is provided to cushion an impact from a rotor to the wear detection probe and to hold the wear detection probe in a specified position during the contact with the rotor. For these purposes, a biasing mount plate 16 is formed with biasing pieces 21. A stopper mount plate 15 is formed with stopper pieces 19, and a wear detection probe 10 is provided with locking pins 14. When being subjected to an impact from a rotor R, the wear detection probe 10 moves backward while the biasing pieces 21 undergo an elastic deformation by being pushed by the locking pins 14, with the result that the impact is cushioned. When the wear detection probe 10 moves backward, the locking pins 14 come into contact with the stopper pieces 19 and, accordingly, the wear detection probe 10 is held in contact with the rotor R while being held in the specified position.

  • Patent number: 6311554
Abstract: The invention provides a brake lining wear indicator for use with a brake pad/shoe having a friction lining secured to a plate. The indicator includes a flag positionable adjacent a thickness of the lining, and a base and a resilient member for clipping the indicator onto the plate. The base rigidly extends from the flag, generally perpendicular to the flag and is positionable against a side of the plate. The resilient member is for extending to the other side of the plate to clamp the base against the plate and secure the flag adjacent the thickness of the lining. The thickness of the lining can then be compared to the height of the flag to determine the amount of lining wear.

  • Patent number: 5970427
Abstract: A brake testing device evaluates the condition of a disk having a disk axis and first and second disk surfaces that are normal to the disk axis. The device has a pair of gauges, each having a sensing element for measuring the position of one of the disk surfaces along a line parallel to the disk axis. The gauges generate position signals corresponding to the measured positions of the disk surfaces. The gauges are secured with respect to each other so as to measure positions along parallel lines, and the device positions the gauges to measure the disk surfaces at points equidistant from the disk axis. The gauges are preferably configured to allow testing a disk surrounded by a wheel and a dust shield. The device may be part of a system which processes the position signals to determine the thickness and the lateral run-out of the disk. The system may additionally compare the thickness and lateral runout to manufacturer-specified standards.

  • Patent number: 5485678
Abstract: An apparatus and method for measuring the circularity of a brake drum while the brake drum is mounted upon a vehicle. The apparatus includes a linear voltage displacement transducer mounted upon a stationary portion of the vehicle. The transducer senses the variation of the braking surface and generates a signal proportional thereto. The apparatus also includes an optical encoder that generates a signal indicative of the angular position of the drum. The transducer and encoder are connected to a central processing unit which receives the transducer and encoder signals. The drum is rotated through a plurality of complete revolutions while the central processing unit combines the transducer and encoder signals to generate a set of data points. The central processing unit operates upon the data points to determine the circularity of the braking surface.

Abstract: An adjustable gage is provided with a plurality of pairs of depth stops along the jaws or arms which support the pointed anvils which contact an internal or external cylindrical surface. By adjusting selected depth stops, an either retracted or extended positions, one pair of depth stops engages a rim or abutment surface of a cylindrical member, thereby insuring that the measurement anvils will contact diametrically opposite sides of the cylindrical surface to be measured along a plane which is substantially normal to the axis of the cylindrical surface. This avoids oblique misalignments of the gage and assures precise measurements.
