  • Patent number: 8086329
Abstract: The present invention is related to a method of controlling a device having a calibration process. The calibration process has a partial calibration routine and a calibration routine. A detector within the control system is capable of receiving one or more input signals and determining whether a partial calibration or calibration should occur. The first step in the process involves starting the control method where the detector receives input signals or generates it own data within the detector. The detector also determines whether a partial calibration routine or a calibration routine will take place based upon the value of the input signals received. A partial calibration routine will be performed if the input signals to the detector do not favor a calibration.

  • Patent number: 7397339
Abstract: A thermally actuated device, such as an electrical circuit breaker (10) is provided with an ambient temperature compensation thermostat metal member (38) selected so that it bends when subjected to changes in temperature and compensates for ambient temperature effects on a thermostat metal trip arm for a selected current rating. Movement of such thermostat metal member is directly proportional to the flexivity of the material and to the square of the length of the member and indirectly proportional to the thickness of the member. Since packaging constraints make changes in length impractical, compensation members used to provide temperature compensation for different current ratings of the device typically have been made by using members of different thickness.

Abstract: A heater strip (12) is disposed in spaced relation to a temperature responsive actuator element (20) for indirectly heating that element in response to current flow in the heater (12). An adjustable heat sink (22) is disposed in spaced proximity to the actuator element (20) for removing heat from the actuator element by radiation therefrom through air to the heat sink in a first position and adjustable to be in thermally conductive engagement with the actuator in a second position for increasing the efficiency of heat transfer from the actuator to the heat sink. Increased current flow in the protected branch circuit is required to cause the actuator (20) to attain its predetermined actuation temperature as the heat sink is adjusted to increase the efficiency of heat transfer between the actuator (20) and the heat sink.

  • Patent number: 4231010
Abstract: A thermostatic switch has a thermostatic subassembly located on a header so that movable contacts engage and disengage complementary contacts mounted on the header in response to temperature change. A knurled stud part has an interference fit in a header bore and a nut threadedly engages the opposite end of the stud means and bears against the opposite side of the header. The nut is rotatable for drawing the knurled stud part into the header bore to the desired degree to precisely locate the subassembly relative to the header during switch manufacture and calibration. The interference fit of the knurled stud part in the header bore otherwise cooperates with the nut to prevent rotation or axial movement of the stud means in any direction in the header bore.

  • Patent number: 4166994
Abstract: Thermostats for use in electrically heated appliances have a positive off position and are adapted for transition to a low temperature on position within a small amount (approximately one radian) of control shaft rotation. The thermostats comprise a stacked blade assembly including a lower bimetal temperature responsive blade, an intermediate stiff spring blade and an upper less stiff flexible spring blade, with the spring blade having juxtaposed switch contacts thereon and the bimetal blade operating to separate the switch contacts when the set temperature is attained. A control bracket mounted above the stacked blade assembly defines an opening through which a control shaft extends, the control shaft butting against the stiff spring blade and positioning it. The shaft mounts a cam and the control bracket has a depending cam follower for the cam, wherein the spring blade urges the cam against the cam follower.

  • Patent number: 4023132
Abstract: An electric circuit breaker or overload protection apparatus includes a thermal element which, on being heated by a fault current, is deflected to initiate a circuit-breaking tripping of the apparatus. A supporting mechanism for varying the rating of the apparatus includes an adjusting member or slide displaceable relative to the thermal element so as to vary the action of the thermal element, a recessed manually-operable externally-accessible knob, and a rotatable boss eccentrically and adjustably mounted in the knob recess and operative upon knob rotation to cause a variance in the displacement of the adjusting member and thus a variance in the rating of the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4001752
Abstract: A thermostat includes a base plate supporting a switch and an ambient temperature sensing bimetal that actuates the switch. A set-point adjusting cam cooperates with the bimetal. An internally threaded bushing is supported upright on the base plate and is frictionally locked against rotation. The set-point adjusting cam is supported on a threaded shaft which screws into the bushing. The bushing is rotatable for fine calibration of the thermostat, while the threaded shaft is screwed into the bushing through an appropriate number of turns for coarse calibration.
