Residual hydrocarbons, i.e., heavy oil and solvent employed in the filtration for the heavy oil extraction are removed from the catalyst particles in a drying zone which employs at least two drying apparatuses to volatize residual hydrocarbons in the catalyst. Valuable metals can be recovered from catalyst particles for subsequent re-use in a catalyst synthesis unit, generating a fresh slurry catalyst.

The unfused material is returned to the receiving hopper for further densification and the fused material is conveyed to a granulator, whereupon the dried and densified material is granulated.

The conveying apparatus is vertically, laterally and longitudinally translatable to receive the batches from a washer at one level, to arrange the batches in two rows, and then to automatically feed them, for example two at a time, into the compartments of the segmented extractor.

The separator may thus be horizontally moved for placing it in position with the discharge end extending into the receptacle and for removing it without dismounting the receptacle.
