  • Patent number: 6523278
Abstract: The invention concerns a dryer section, comprising at least one dryer group (R) that makes use of single-wire draw and/or twin-wire draw and at least one suction roll (10) with which the web (W) to be dried is in direct contact. The surface construction of the suction roll (10) is of a fine structure so that the web (W) can be passed to run over the suction roll (10) in direct contact with the roll so that the web (W) is not damaged.

  • Patent number: 6105277
Abstract: A system (20) and associated process for use in the dryer section (18) of a papermachine for promoting complete support of the paper web (32) by the carrier fabric (34) as the fabric and web are transferred between adjacent drying cylinders (22, 24) by way of a turning roll (26) utilizes a blowbox assembly (50) positionable within the pocket region (40) bounded by the drying cylinders and the turning roll. The blowbox assembly is adapted to direct air out of the pocket region to reduce the likelihood of separation of the web from the carrier fabric as the web is moved onto and off of the turning roll.

  • Patent number: 6032385
Abstract: A dryer section in a papermaking machine has two reversing rolls to form a pocket between each pair of dryers in a dryer tier. The first reversing roll is a vacuum roll and the second reversing roll is a grooved roll. A blow box is disposed between the two rolls, the blow box provides suction for the grooved roll and provides vacuum which restrains a web on the dryer fabric as it travels between the first and the second rolls. The blow box also provides a supply of make-up air which extends in a cross machine direction along the pocket formed by the two reversing rolls. The blow box also supports a pivoting foil which is positioned against the dryer fabric as it moves from a first dryer, towards the first reversing roll. The foil defines a region of low pressure which restrains the web as it travels between the first dryer and the first reversing roll.

  • Patent number: 5873180
Abstract: A single tier dryer system has dryer rolls with a reversing roll positioned between each pair to transfer and wrap the dryer felt and paper web against the next dryer roll. A vacuum box is positioned between the dryer rolls and over the reversing roll to hold the web on the dryer felt by vacuum. Threading of a tail from the web is accomplished by blowing the web tail off a first dryer roll's surface with a jet of air positioned adjacent to the position on the dryer roll where the dryer felt leaves the dryer roll's surface. The vacuum box is divided by a baffle to isolate a portion of the vacuum box near the front of the dryer rolls, and a damper is positioned within the reversing roll to increase the vacuum in the isolated portion of the vacuum box to facilitate threading of the tail.

  • Patent number: 5829164
Abstract: A machine for producing a material web, e.g., a paper or cardboard web, with a dryer section including at least one dryer group having a plurality of dryer cylinders and a plurality of web guide rolls, e.g., suction web guide rolls. At least one web guide roll, and preferably all, may be associated with an external suction box. Further, a jacket of the at least one web guide roll may include a plurality of through openings and at least one groove formed in an outer surface of the jacket. A predetermined number, and preferably all, of the through openings may be coupled with a bottom portion of the at least one groove to enable the external suction box to suction the at least one web guide roll.

  • Patent number: 5699626
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for reducing the moisture content of a paper web in a papermaking process from in the range of 10% to 32% dry to the range of 33% to 50% dry wherein the embryonic web is supported on a knuckled through drier fabric and lightly pressed between the knuckled through drier fabric and a capillary membrane of a capillary dewatering roll. The capillary membrane has capillary pores therethrough which have a substantially straight through, non-tortuous path with a pore aspect ratio of from about 2 to about 20. A vacuum is drawn within the capillary dewatering roll which is not greater than the negative capillary suction pressure of the capillary pores.

  • Patent number: 5673495
Abstract: A drying section of a papermaking machine is constituted of a plurality of top-felted single-tier drying section which terminate with one or at most two two-tier sections which are both top-felted. The invention allows broke to fall by gravity, greatly facilitating broke removal and recycling. Moreover, the location of the double-tiers at the end of the drying sections affords opportunity for controlling curl.

  • Patent number: 5535527
Abstract: A method for causing adherence of a web to a drying wire so as to prevent the effects of centrifugal forces and of other air-flow phenomena, which effects attempt to separate the web from the drying wire in dryer groups having a single-wire draw and arranged in a multi-cylinder dryer of a paper machine. The dryer groups include heated drying cylinders, a drying wire for pressing the web against outer cylinder faces of the drying cylinders, and guide cylinders or rolls on which the web runs on the outside face of the drying wire. The guide cylinders have perforations which pass through the cylinder mantle and open into an inside space in the interior of the guide cylinders which is subjected to a vacuum. The vacuum in the guide cylinders is transferred to the outside face through the perforations. The guide cylinders have shafts on which the guide cylinders are mounted revolving.
