Abstract: Described herein are devices and methods for reducing thermal stresses in a rotating, foraminous thin-shelled roll for drying permeable and semi-permeable webs by blocking axial flow of heated air through an axial channel formed between two corrugated layers in the shell. The axial channels extend between spaced-apart, parallel end members each having an inner face, and a plurality of alternating straight thin divider strips and bent thin strips extending axially between and evenly-spaced around the circumference of the inner faces of the end members to form an annular cylinder with radial channels therethrough. Affixing at least one impermeable insert into a radial channel so that it extends through the radial channel and across at least a portion of the faces of the two tiers of bent strips blocks the axial channel therebetween and prevents the passage of air therethrough to the end member.

The present invention is operable within a drying system having a drying hood containing a dryer. The drying hood receives heated air through an intake and expels system air through an exhaust. The portion of system air that is maintained in the system is divided into two portions and directed into separate parallel conduits for two-stage heating that results in greater temperature uniformity and efficiency within the system. One loop includes a mixing chamber for the initial mixing of system air with the combustion products of a burner. • Patent number: 6050316
Abstract: A single facer including a preheater for conditioning a paperboard web. The preheater is positioned upstream form a corrugating nip and includes an arcuate surface facing the web. A plurality of primary channels are disposed internally within the preheater in thermal communication with the arcuate surface. High pressure steam is supplied to the primary channels for heating the arcuate surface. A plurality of outlet ports extend within the preheater and are in fluid communication with the heated arcuate surface. Low pressure steam is released through the plurality of outlet ports thereby producing a steam film between the heated arcuate surface and the paperboard web. The steam film dramatically increases heat transfer to the paperboard web while also reducing frictional forces opposing movement of the web.

Abstract: Air-blowing nozzles 21 for blowing a hot air are provided in both sides of an electrode sheet 33 for a battery both surfaces of which an electrode compounding agent has been applied to. In each of the air-blowing nozzles 21, a pair of slit-shaped blowholes 65 being extended in the width direction of the electrode sheet 33 are provided on both of the upper and lower sides of the end face part 63. The hot air blown off from a pair of the upper and lower blowholes 65 dries the electrode compounding agent as well as pressurizes a space between the electrode sheet 33 and the end face part 63 to form a pressure room P, and the left and right pressure rooms P hold the electrode sheet 33 to suppress its sway.

  • Patent number: 5638610
Abstract: In the case of a heat setting chamber for the continuous heat setting of yarns, entry and exit openings are provided, through which transport belts are fed and onto which transport belts the yarns are placed in loops. In the area of the entry and exit openings, ventilation seals are provided, on which the heat setting medium flows against the loops from underneath. The mouths of extractor vents are arranged vertically over the ventilation seals. The heat setting medium can thus penetrate the yarn loops in the area of the entry and exit openings simultaneously from above and below.

  • Patent number: 5457283
Abstract: A space-saving apparatus and method for coating paper sheets with lacquer and drying the sheets with streams of air are provided. The sheets are coated with lacquer and are moved by parallel and spaced apart conveyer belts in a first direction as the sheets are dried and supported by streams of air that are directed against the paper sheets and against and through the undersides of the conveyer belts. The movement of the paper sheets is then reversed to a second direction and the dried sheets are collected above the conveyer belts as they move in the second direction.
