Abstract: A system and method are described for determining properties of particulates. The device collects particulates on the surface of an oscillating balance and compares the natural resonant frequency of the balance with the particulates with a balance without particulates. In addition, the collected particulates are illuminated with light that is absorbed by the particulates. This causes the balance to heat up, affecting the natural resonant frequency. A comparison of the natural resonant frequencies reveals optical properties of the collected particulates, which may be used to speciate the particulates.

Abstract: A temperature measuring device includes a heat plate exposed to the ambient, one or more sensor chips, and one or more device electronics that include a power transmitter, a wireless communication receiving block, and a processor. Each sensor chip includes a wireless communication transmitting block, a temperature sensor, a signal processing block, and an energy harvesting circuit. The heat plate and the sensor chips are positioned within an indent formed in an exposed surface of a device cover, such as a glass cover. The energy harvesting circuit harvests energy from an electromagnetic signal transmitted by the power transmitter. Temperature data sensed by each temperature sensor is wirelessly transmitted by the wireless communication transmitting block to the wireless communication receiving block. The processor determines an ambient temperature corrected for heat influences on the temperature sensors by internal device electronics.

Abstract: Various embodiments of a programmable barrier alarm are described. In one embodiment, a programmable barrier alarm comprises a magnet and a sensor, the sensor comprising a magnetic field detector for sensing a magnetic field produced by the magnet and for producing an electronic signal associated with the magnetic field, a processor, and, a memory for storing an alarm threshold value and processor-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the sensor to, in a calibration mode of operation, calculate the alarm threshold value based on a first magnetic field sensed by the magnetic field detector when the barrier is in the closed position, and in a normal mode of operation, compare the electronic signal from the magnetic field detector to the alarm threshold value, and generate an alarm signal if the electronic signal falls below the alarm threshold value.

  • Patent number: 9389164
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for measuring the cleanliness of molten metals. Direct current is passed between electrodes through molten metal advancing through a passage in an electrically resistive wall. A voltage signal is analyzed for the presence of solid generally non-metallic inclusions in the metal. Direct current is supplied by one or more ultra-capacitors and the decay in discharge voltage of the capacitor(s) is compensated for by passing the current from each capacitor through a resistor ladder network circuit having resistors connected in parallel. Individual resistors are switched on or off in a sequence effective to change the resistance of the circuit and maintain the current within a predetermined range. Heat generation and noise pick-up are minimized by maintaining a low discharge voltage and measurement current while using FETs only in the fully ON or OFF conditions to switch the resistors into or out of the circuits.

  • Patent number: 9170707
Abstract: An electronic device with a display, processor(s), and memory displays a video monitoring user interface including a video feed from a camera located remotely from the client device in a first region and an event timeline in a second region, the event timeline including event indicators for motion events previously detected by the camera. The electronic device detects a user input selecting a portion of the event timeline, where the selected portion of the event timeline includes a subset of the event indicators. In response to the user input, the electronic device causes generation of a time-lapse video clip of the selected portion of the event timeline. The electronic device displays the time-lapse video clip, where motion events corresponding to the subset of the event indicators are played at a slower speed than the remainder of the selected portion of the event timeline.
