  • Patent number: 6452492
Abstract: An alert system for providing an alert of an actual or impending emergency to homes, businesses and the like. The alert system is used in cable system network over which communication signals are transmitted to a receiver remote from the transmitter. Such communication signals have associated therewith at least one distinguishable modulation frequency. The alert system includes a mechanism for receiving an alert request and a transmitter for transmitting an alert signal in response to the alert request. The transmitter is coupled with the cable system and generates an alert signal which is modulated at a frequency distinguishable from the frequencies of the communication signals. The transmitter includes a sideband filter to reduce the subharmonics generated around the alert signal frequency. The receiver includes a mechanism for detecting a valid alert signal from the alert signal received and for generating an alarm signal therefrom.

Both types of device normally apply a high impedance across the supply lines in a standby condition, and a low impedance in an alarm condition. Abstract: A signal transmission apparatus including a main unit having a signal transmission terminal, and one or more sub units (or repeaters) each having first and second signal transmission terminals. A loop connection line is provided between the main unit and a first sub unit, and additional loop connection lines are provided between subsequent pairs of sub units to convey signals from the main unit to each of the sub units, and from each of the sub units to the main unit. The main unit includes a controller, a signal generator for generating and sending a first signal to one of the sub units, and a signal processor for processing a second signal returned from one of the sub units in response to the first signal. Each of the sub units includes a controller, a destination signal determination section, and a signal transfer section for selectively capturing and transferring a signal according to its destination address.

Abstract: The operating status of a plurality of laundry appliances including washing machines and/or driers is sensed, and a controller generates and transmits corresponding status signals to remote transceivers which include visual or audio indicators for indicating the information. Each transceiver can interrogate the controller to determine the status of the appliances, with the status being transmitted only to the interrogating transmitter. Each transceiver can also transmit a reservation signal to the controller to reserve a selected appliance for a predetermined period of time. The controller also transmits status signals for the selected appliance only to the transceiver of the user who reserved the appliance when the operating cycle is finished, or at a predetermined period of time prior to the end of the operating cycle. The transceivers can communicate with the controller over a telephone line, or over A.C. power lines.

  • Patent number: 5719551
Abstract: A vehicle security system includes a vehicle security sensor and associated sensor bus interface, an alarm indicator and associated alarm indicator bus interface, and an alarm controller and associated alarm controller bus interface for interfacing the alarm controller. The vehicle security system is for a vehicle of a type including a data communications bus connecting a plurality of vehicle devices. The security system preferably further includes a desired signal enabling circuit for enabling the alarm controller to operate using a set of desired signals for a desired vehicle from among a plurality of possible sets of signals for different vehicles. Accordingly, the desired signal enabling circuit permits the alarm controller to communicate with the vehicle security sensor and the alarm indicator via the data communications bus so that the alarm controller is capable of operating the alarm indicator responsive to the vehicle security sensor.

  • Patent number: 5705979
Abstract: An interface unit interposed between a central alarm panel and a string of smoke detectors interconnected by a three-wire bus. Two wires of the bus carry AC power and the third wire is an interunit signalling wire. When an individual detector senses a smoke condition, it places a voltage on the signalling wire. The other detectors sound their alarms upon detecting this voltage. The interface unit senses this voltage and notifies the central alarm panel, with the sensing circuitry having a variable high input impedance and being powered solely from the signalling wire. The interface unit includes a test button which, when actuated, disables communications to the central alarm panel for a predetermined period of time. During this time, the interface unit places a periodic signal on the signalling wire, which causes all of the detectors to "beep" while that signal is present. The interface unit also senses the absence of AC power on the bus for notifying the alarm panel of such AC power failure.

  • Patent number: 5578987
Abstract: A monitoring apparatus for an alarm device for situations wherein the alarm device is provided at a location remote from the alarm device drive side, which can verify from the alarm device drive side if an audible alarm has sounded. The drive of the alarm device (1) is stopped by switching off a drive switch (12) on the alarm device drive side (A). After stopping the drive of the alarm device (1) an audible alarm generation sensed signal from the response device (2) on the alarm device side (B)is received at the alarm device drive side (A) though the feeder (a). Then, after the audible alarm generation sensed signal has stopped, and on receipt of a verification signal verifying that the alarm device drive side (B) has returned to the original condition, a verification output (F3) for the audible alarm generation is generated at the alarm device drive side (A).

  • Patent number: 5479150
Abstract: A bridge failure alarm system designed to be used with bridges has a plurality of spans across the length of the bridge, activates an alarm whenever the distance between any two adjacent spans is greater than a predetermined safe distance. This is accomplished by providing a conduction path extending from one end of the bridge along a first side of the bridge to the other end of the bridge and then back to the first end of the bridge by a conduction path located on the other side of the bridge. Between every expansion joint located between each adjacent span of the bridge are two jumpers to provide electrical connection across the expansion joints, one jumper located on each side of the bridge proximate to each expansion joint. In this manner, should any one of the expansion joints exceed a predetermined width placing two adjacent spans at a distance greater than the predetermined safe distance, at least one of the jumpers located therebetween will break the conduction path causing the alarm to be activated.
