Signal Strength Patents (Class 340/539.21)
  • Patent number: 6847295
Abstract: An anti-abduction system and method is disclosed which utilizes a radio frequency transceiver attached to a slave to communicate with a corresponding master transceiver to detect and prevent abductions, which may be advantageously applied to situations in which child abduction is a possibility. The disclosed system and method utilizes communication protocols to notify the master of the proximal locality of the slave unit and any spatial deviation of the slave from the master. Utilization of varying strength transceiver signaling between the master and slave permits the distance between the master and slave to be approximated. Additionally, the slave may contain an optional heartbeat monitor to detect and report situations in which the device is removed from the potential abduction victim.

Abstract: A weight-sensitive mat or other sensor determines whether a child seat in a vehicle is occupied, a transmitter is proximate to the sensor, and a keychain fob or other portable unit includes a receiver and an alarm. Generally, if the child seat is occupied and the keychain fob is removed from proximity to the transmitter, the transmitter communicates this to the keychain fob receiver and the alarm is activated. Exemplary embodiments include an add-on kit including a base unit with a transceiver for use with existing car seats having a base and a detachable shell, an add-on kit without the base unit for use with existing unitary car seats, and a car seat with the child sensor, transmitter, and/or base unit built into it.

Abstract: Individuals who carry personal transmitters in a particular area are remotely monitored so that such individuals may indicate an emergency. In the event of an emergency (or other event), the individual may activate his or her personal transmitter. The signal sent by the transmitter is then detected by an array of sensors. The sensors are capable of determining a signal strength of the signal from the personal transmitter. A computer console is coupled to the sensors to receive the signal strength indications. The computer console is capable of calculating a location (e.g., within an area of uncertainty around a point location) of the transmitter based on the received signal strengths determined by one or more of the sensors. Emergency services may then be contacted and dispatched automatically or depending on a set of expert rules or depending on user input.

  • Publication number: 20040160320
Abstract: A system and method use a wireless tether comprising a transmitter and a receiver to alert a caregiver that an object has been left unattended. A detector senses the presence of the object, usually a child, located in a position such as a safety seat. The detector is operatively coupled to the transmitter, which is located near the object. The transmitter transmits at least one wireless signal when the object is in the position. The receiver, which is remotely located from the transmitter, senses the at least one signal as long as the receiver is within a prescribed range of transmission. By performing a timing function, the receiver monitors the proximity of the caregiver, who maintains possession of the receiver, to the transmitter. The system communicates an alarm to the caregiver when the caregiver ventures outside the range of transmission without having removed the object from the position.

Abstract: A vehicle communication device is installed in a vehicle and used for an ETC or other DSRC system. The vehicle communication device can be switched between a normal mode and a radio wave emitting mode. The vehicle communication device in the normal mode transmits a response signal in response to receiving a pilot signal from a roadside radio device. The vehicle communication device in the emitting mode continuously emits a radio wave through the windshield of the vehicle independently of whether it receives the pilot signal from the roadside radio device, and a checking device receives the radio wave. The checking device determines whether the intensity of the received radio wave is greater than a predetermined threshold. The result of the determination is reported to a staff in a service or repair shop so that a shop staff can determine whether the vehicle communication device can be used for the ETC or other DSRC system based on the reported result.
