    Abstract: An electromagnetic system is provided to monitor the activity of a ferrous debris detector of the type which uses electric discharges to automatically disintegrate magnetically concentrated accumulations of micron sized wear particles in hydraulic systems. The data provided are used to detect instances of abnormal wear as shown by either an unusually large number of such discharges or an excessive rate of discharge. Where such abnormality occurs the monitor will provide an audiovisual alarm to warn of the problem in time to prevent catastrophic failure of the system.

    Abstract: A gas sensor unit designed to indicate the presence of hydrocarbon vapors but be insensitive to carbon monoxide. The unit comprises two TGS sensors, one covered by a semi-permeable membrane and the other uncovered; the uncovered sensor responds to both crude oil and carbon monoxide, the covered sensor responds only to carbon monoxide. In one embodiment, the two sensors are connected in series; the total response of both sensors and the difference in response between the two sensors are measured, and changes in the parameters indicate the presence of an oil spill. In another embodiment, each sensor's output is compared with its reference voltage; if the uncovered sensor has an output that is higher than its reference while the covered one does not, the presence of an oil spill is indicated.

    Abstract: A device for indicating the presence of electrically conducting particles, such as metal detritus, in a liquid such as hydraulic oil passing through a filter in which a gap is provided adjacent the filter into which metal particles are swept by the liquid flow to form a conducting bridge in an electrical circuit. In a preferred embodiment, an annular gap closed to through flow is provided between an insulated metal ring around a filter element and the wall of the flow passage surrounding the filter, and the ring and the wall are connected to an electrical circuit for actuating a warning light or audible alarm when the gap is bridged.

    Abstract: A transistorized engine chip detection system including a milliammeter to give a visual indication of chip buildup and a full light to operate at a critical preset level, utilizing a voltage divider network, a decrease in resistance in the chip detector will cause an increase in current flow, and subsequent lighting of a warning light. A short circuit or large chip would turn light on and give full scale meter reading, broken or unplugged harness turns light on and gives zero meter reading.

    Abstract: A ferrous metal detecting apparatus is disclosed for detecting metal particles in a flowing fluid, such as engine oil. The detecting apparatus has soft-iron pole pieces with a bridging gap therebetween. The soft-iron pole pieces are electrically insulated from each other and magnetized by direct current through an electromagnetic coil. After a sufficient amount of ferrous metal has accumulated on the bridging gap, a level detector will give a warning signal and cause the electromagnetic coil to degauss the soft-iron pole pieces by applying an alternating current to the electromagnetic coil. After the flowing fluid has washed away the ferrous metal, the direct current will remagnetize the soft-iron pole pieces. If repeated warning signals are within predetermined time intervals, an indication of the amount of ferrous metal contained in the fluid can be interpolated. The recycling for repeated warning signals may be automatically provided through a timing circuit and control logic.
