  • Patent number: 7980327
Abstract: The invention provides for systems and methods of enhancing crude oil recovery providing an array of electromagnetic receiver antennae arranged and operated in conjunction with an array of far field electromagnetic transmitter antennae for mapping subsurface features of a reservoir. Mapping is performed according to the relative intensities, frequencies, phase shifts, and/or other reflected signal parameters of the reflections received by the receiver antennae (relative to the transmit signals) associated with a given location or target area within a reservoir. Such mapping aids in determining an optimal location of a production well or the location of an auxiliary well relative to the production well.

Abstract: An electromagnetic well borehole telemetry system for transmitting information between a downhole transceiver, disposed preferably within a borehole assembly in the borehole, and a surface transceiver positioned at or near the surface of the earth. A trigger and cooperating strobe are used to define strobe increments. Synchronous telemetry measurements made during the strobe increments are algebraically summed to identify a synchronous cyclical noise component in a composite electromagnetic telemetry signal. Any non cyclical noise components occurring during the strobe increments algebraically cancel in the algebraic summing operation. The cyclical noise component is then removed from the composite signal thereby increasing the signal to noise ratio of the telemetry system. The system is particularly effective in minimizing electromagnetic noise generated by the rotation of a rotating element such as the rotary table or top drive of a drilling rig.

Abstract: The present invention concerns application of a unique conductive electrode geometry used to form an efficient wideband, one- or two-way wireless data link between autonomous systems separated by some distance along a bore hole drill string. One objective is the establishment of an efficient, high bandwidth communication link between such separated systems, using a unique electrode configuration that also aids in maintaining a physically robust drill string. Insulated or floating electrodes of various selected geometries provide a means for sustaining or maintaining a modulated electric potential adapted for injecting modulated electrical current into the surrounding sub-surface medium. Such modulated current conveys information to the systems located along the drill string by establishing a potential across a receiving insulated or floating electrode.

  • Patent number: 7518527
Abstract: A measuring while drilling system typically has a metal pipework extending underground connected to an antenna. The metal pipework and the antenna are both connected to a type of downhole equipment. The antenna transmits or receives signals to/from a transceiver located on the surface, and the transceiver is connected to the metal pipeword and to a ground. The system is improved by joining a plurality of sections of wired drill pipe together to form a section where the antenna is integral with the metal pipework. One end of the section of wired drill pipe is joined to downhole equipment and another end is joined to a conventional metal pipework.

Abstract: Aspects of this invention include a downhole assembly having a non-contact, capacitive coupling including first and second transceivers deployed in corresponding first and second downhole tool members. The capacitive coupling is disposed to transfer electrical signals between the first and second transceivers. In one exemplary embodiment, the capacitive coupling is configured to transfer data and power between a substantially non-rotating tool member and a rotating tool member, for example, the shaft and blade housing in a steering tool. Exemplary embodiments of this invention provide a non-contact, high-speed data communication channel between first and second members of a downhole assembly. Moreover, exemplary embodiments of the invention also provide for simultaneous non-contact transmission of electrical power between the first and second tool members.
