    Abstract: Ideographic keyboard and method in which an array of characters are printed on one side of a panel and optically readable data corresponding to the characters is recorded on the other side of the panel. A character selector is moved about the first side the panel for selective alignment with the characters, and an optical reader is linked to the character selector for movement about the recorded data in concert with the character selector. The data corresponding to a selected character is read, and a coded signal for the selected character is output in response to the data which is read. In one disclosed embodiment, the data is recorded in the form of bar coding, and the reader is a bar code reader. Precise alignment of the reader with the data for the selected character is assured by reading data from a region larger than the data field itself and extracting the character data in software.

    Abstract: Depending on the size of the character sets, more steps may be designated with the same letters-followed-by-digits pattern. With the encoding system, an ideographic based language can be transcribed, or ciphered, into an easy-to-read stream of phonetic symbols and a discourse in the language can be input with commonly used computer keyboards. Since the system of encoding employs variable code length, it can be applied to much larger character sets by using longer codes. It also can be applied to character sets with different characteristics by appropriate reordering of the steps. The letters-followed-by-digits coding pattern is used for each characteristic of the ideographic symbols, independent of the symbols' relative graphic image locations in font tables and the size of character set, so that different configurations of the encoding can be software compatible across many character sets and languages.

The tool-like icon image selected for the cursor is then moved to one of a plurality of the images which represent word-oriented information or a component thereof. When the cursor is activated on the image, a display of information represented by the tool-like icon acting on the word-oriented image is then visually displayed by the computer.

The code provides for the conversion of analog voice frequency signals to digital signals. The digital signals may be converted to analog signals to provide voice prompts to the caller. The letters and characters are sequentially arrayed on a matrix overlaying the telephone keypad. Characters are positioned above and between the push buttons so that each character may be separately accessed from adjacent keys. Entry of a keypair requires the sequential pressing of at least one key two times. Sequential operations that require the pressing of two different and adjacent keys may be performed in any sequence.
