  • Patent number: 9268413
Abstract: The present invention relates to a multi-touch display system that supports both multi-touch human input as well as input from a digital pen. The display system has a display panel that is configured to allow human touches along a front surface to be detected and tracked. The display panel also includes a location pattern that preferably covers the viewable areas of the display panel. The location pattern is configured to allow any location within the location pattern to be detected by analyzing a portion of the display pattern that is associated with the particular location. The digital pen is used to “write” on the display panel, wherein such a writing function involves detecting the location where writing occurs and controlling display content that is displayed on the display panel to reflect what is being written.

Abstract: An apparatus is controlled to detect locations of a plurality of objects on a touch surface of a panel. An input scanner arrangement introduces at least three beams of radiation into the panel for propagation by internal reflection, and sweeps the beams inside the panel across a sensing area, preferably in at least two different principal directions. At least one radiation detector is arranged to receive the beams from the input scanner arrangement while they are swept across the sensing area. A data processor is connected to the radiation detector(s) and operated to identify the locations based on an attenuation of the beams caused by the objects touching the touch surface within the sensing area, the attenuation being identifiable from an output signal of the radiation detector(s). Each output signal may be further processed to generate a transmission signal, by dividing the output signal by a background signal which represents the output signal without any object on the touch surface.

Abstract: Pressure-sensing touch systems and methods are disclosed for sensing the occurrence of a touch event based on pressure applied at a touch location. The touch system includes a light-source system and a detector system operably adjacent respective input and output edges of a waveguide. Pressure at a touch location on the waveguide gives rise to a touch event causes the waveguide to bend or flex. The waveguide bending causes a change in the optical paths of light traveling by FTIR, causing the light distribution in the output light to change. The changes are detected and are used to determine whether a touch event occurred, as well as the time-evolution of the touch event. The changes in the output light can include polarization changes caused by birefringence induced in the waveguide by the applied pressure applied. Various detector configurations are disclosed for sensing the location and pressure of a touch event.

Abstract: An electronic display device being arrangeable during use into one of at least an opened and a closed state. The device includes a deformable display panel having an active area, a periphery area adjacent the active area, and a drive circuit for driving the active area. The active area includes an active area conductive structure substantially arranged along a front side of the active area. The periphery area includes a frame structure for visually bounding the active area. The frame structure is conformal to the display panel. The frame structure is electrically conductive and an insulator structure is provided between the active area conductive structure and the conductive frame structure. The insulator structure insulates the active area conductive structure from frame structure, the conductive frame structure being arranged to thereby shield the active area against ESD damage.

Abstract: A human-machine interface includes a panel formed of energy transmissive material having a contact surface on which one or more contacts may simultaneously be made. An energy source directs energy to the panel. The panel transmits energy received from the energy source to the contact surface. At least one parameter of the energy transmitted by the panel is altered at regions where contacts are made with the contact surface. A detector is coupled to the panel and detects the at least one parameter of the energy generally over the area of the contact surface and outputs values corresponding thereto. A processor is in communication with the detector. The processor processes the output values to determine the locations of the contact regions on the contact surface and at least one other attributed associated with each of the contacts.

When an arbitrary point on the front panel is touched, the touch panel computes a touched point on the touch panel by using both the received pulse signals obtained from the Y electrodes in a case where the front panel is not deformed and the received pulse signals obtained from the Y electrodes in a case where the front panel is deformed. With this, an erroneous operation in which a measurement value is lowered to finally disappear is prevented.

Abstract: An image display unit and a method of detecting an object which are capable of reliably detecting an object with a simple structure irrespective of use conditions are provided. Invisible light is emitted from a screen of a display portion. The invisible light reflected from a target object which comes in contact with or close to the screen is received on the screen. On the basis of the received invisible light, the target object is detected. Thus, the target object can be reliably detected without influence of the display state of the display portion, and influence of use conditions such as surrounding circumstances (the case where it is bright or dark). Moreover, for example, it is not necessary to separately arrange a component such as a touch panel, so the image display unit can be achieved with a simple structure.
