Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes first and second display panels each including scan lines arranged in a row direction, signal lines arranged in a column direction, and pixels arranged in a matrix at intersections of the first scan lines and the first signal lines. The first display panel and the second display panel are set in a non-display mode and in a display mode, respectively. Shift registers and buffer circuits connected to respective groups of scan lines sequentially drive respective group of scan lines in the first display panel during a vertical blanking time of the second display panel. The pixels of the first display panel are driven to refresh by writing an image signal for a black display in the first display panel.

  • Patent number: 8363070
Abstract: Correction data tables or look up tables (LUTs) are stored in a table memory. When an overshoot calculation section switches an active LUT, the overshoot calculation section obtains the new active LUT not out of an external memory but out of the table memory. A table managing section deletes, from the internal memory, LUTs to which the new active LUT does not switch over directly, for example non-adjacent LUTs, meanwhile the table managing section obtains a new adjacent LUT from the external memory so as to store the new adjacent LUT in the table memory. With the arrangement, it becomes possible for a drive circuit to (i) operate at the same processing speed as a drive circuit in which all tables are stored in the internal memory, and simultaneously, (ii) reduce the amount of memory.

  • Patent number: 8294738
Abstract: There is provided a liquid crystal display. A liquid crystal display panel displays an image. An external light sensor senses a color temperature of external light around the liquid crystal display panel. The output luminance of a backlight is controlled in response to an adjustment dimming signal which is varied according to an input image. A gamma curve adjustment circuit restores an original color of the display image irrespective of a change in the viewing environments by modulating input digital video data based on the color temperature of the external light or a relative maximum white luminance for the adjustment dimming signal.

Abstract: A driving method for driving an LCD panel having a counter electrode and a source line. In a first period, the counter electrode is driven to a potential VCOMH. In a second period, the counter electrode and the source line are short-circuited to a power supply interconnection having a power supply potential VCI. In a third period, the counter electrode is connected to a ground interconnection while the source line is kept to be short-circuited to the power supply interconnection. In a fourth period, the counter electrode is pulled down to a potential VCOML lower than a ground potential In a fifth period, the source line is driven to a potential corresponding to an image data while the counter electrode is kept to the potential VCOML. The electric power consumed in pulling down the counter electrode from a positive potential to a negative potential can be effectively reduced.

  • Patent number: 8264435
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes pixels having a plurality of subpixels. The pixels include data displaying subpixels having a first pixel electrode receiving red, green, and blue data voltages to display an image, and a common electrode to which a common voltage is applied. The pixels further a viewing angle controlling subpixel driven in response to a voltage applied to the common electrode, a side electrode separated from the common electrode, and a second pixel electrode. Each of the subpixels includes a rib distorting an electric field applied to the corresponding liquid crystal layer. The viewing angle controlling subpixel delays a phase of the light from the data displaying subpixels when a voltage having a voltage difference from the common voltage is applied to the side electrode during a narrow viewing angle mode of the liquid crystal display device.

  • Patent number: 8144141
Abstract: A liquid crystal display which may suppress image quality deterioration and enhance image contrast is provided. The liquid crystal display includes: a light source unit including a light source having divided lighting sections and a light source control section; a liquid crystal display panel including pixels and modulating light from the light source; and a display driving section performing a polarity inversion driving based on the inputted video signal. The display driving section corrects the inputted video signal, for each of divided display regions in the liquid crystal display panel corresponding to ON-state divided lighting sections, based on a light control signal from the light source control section, so that a amplitude center potential of the driving voltage with a waveform of alternately-inverting polarity substantially agrees with the common potential. The driving voltage based on a corrected video signal is then applied to the liquid crystal element.
