Abstract: A novel technique for analyzing a biological state is provided. A body trunk biological signal (aortic pulse wave) extracted from the back of a body trunk is differentiated twice. By using a resultant second derivative waveform, a waveform component of a maximum amplitude of a low frequency appearing as a result of switch of an amplitude from attenuation to amplification in transition from a contracting phase to a diastolic phase of a ventricle is specified in each period of the second derivative waveform. Inflection points are specified that appear before and after the maximum amplitude waveform component. A biological state is analyzed using information about each of the inflection points. The two inflection points obtained from a reference form of the second derivative waveform of the aortic pulse wave substantially agree in time phase with first heart sound and second heart sound (or an R wave and a T wave in an electrocardiogram) indicating the dynamic state of a cardiovascular system.
Abstract: In a method for dynamically highlighting repetitive text in electronic documents, obtaining one or more user preferences related to a user reading an electronic document. The method further includes determining whether the electronic document contains one or more repetitive text associations, wherein a repetitive text association is data that provides one or more indications of repetitive text segments interspersed within a document. In response to determining that the electronic document contains one or more repetitive text associations, the method further includes identifying one or more repetitive text segments in the electronic document corresponding to the one or more repetitive text associations and determining a time duration expended by the user reading an instance of the identified one or more repetitive text segments within the electronic document.

Abstract: A base support arm is provided for an ophthalmic instrument with a moveable optics head. The base support arm is configured so that the support arm must be deployed to stabilize the instrument before the instrument head can be moved sideways in a manner that could otherwise destabilize the instrument. In addition, an angled chin-rest assembly pivot axis is provided that moves the chin-rest assembly from a compactly folded shape into a position that is suitable for supporting the patient's head. The support arm is linked to the chin-rest assembly pivot by a linkage or other mechanism so that movement of the support arm also unfolds the chin-rest assembly and ensures that the chin-rest assembly cannot be unfolded without deploying the support arm.

Abstract: A method for identifying film includes locating a visual identifier proximally to perforations on a film length. Preferably, the visual identifier is located between perforations on the film proximal to an edge distal from a soundtrack on the film.
Abstract: Decrease in optical near-field intensity is prevented when an light propagating medium made of a high refractive index material, such as a waveguide or a lens, is combined with a scatterer for producing optical near-field. Near the optical near-field generating element, a second light propagating medium is disposed in contact with a first light propagating medium of a high refractive index material, such as a waveguide or a lens. The refractive index of the second light propagating medium is made smaller than the refractive index of the first light propagating medium.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for manufacturing hybrid disc whose recordable-band grooves are wider and shallower than the pre-recorded ROM data pits. The ROM pits may be pre-recorded in ROM grooves that are at least as wide, but shallower than, the ROM pits. The ROM lands intervene between consecutive ROM pits, whether or not a ROM groove is provided. In the preferred embodiment, one beam of a dual beam apparatus records the ROM pits, while the other beam records the pre-grooves, and also records the ROM groove, if present. In most embodiments a thermal mastering process provides smooth feature surfaces to facilitate replication of the hybrid disc masters. The berms normally forming at the radial extremities of the pits and grooves in the masters, by thermal expulsion processes, may be reduced or eliminated by methods taught.
Abstract: A surface optical device apparatus includes a surface optical device and a second substrate. The surface optical device includes a functional layer grown on a first substrate, which acts as a supporting substrate for fabricating the functional layer thereon. The first substrate is later thinned or removed, and a first electrode is formed on at least one of surfaces of the functional layer. The surface optical device performs light emission or light reception along a direction approximately perpendicular to the first substrate, and the first electrode has functionality for electrically controlling the light emission or reception. The second substrate includes a second electrode formed thereon, and the surface optical device is bonded to the second substrate with the first electrode and the second electrode in electrical contact with each other.
