Data Rate Reduction Patents (Class 348/387.1)
  • Patent number: 10202126
Abstract: A self-driving vehicle (SDV) can analyze a live sensor view to autonomously operate acceleration, braking, and steering systems of the SDV along a current route. The SDV can identify an indeterminate object in the live sensor view, and encoding sensor data identifying the indeterminate object for transmission to a backend transport system over one or more networks. The SDV may then receive a resolution response from the backend transport system to resolve the indeterminate object, and cause the SDV to proceed in accordance with the resolution response.

  • Publication number: 20140104492
Abstract: Systems and methods for transmitting video frames are described. Specifically, frame rate modification techniques such as blending and/or packing processes are used to translate high frame-rate signals into low-frame rate signals, which are transmitted over limited bandwidth transmission media to a video signal receiver. Information pertaining to the blending and/or packing processes is transferred to the video signal receiver in the form of a map that is used to reconstruct the high frame-rate signals from the low-frame rate signals. The high frame-rate signals may be used by certain types of newer equipment designed to use such signals. However, legacy equipment that cannot use the high frame-rate signals may opt to use certain embodiments described herein that are designed to be backward-compatible. When backward-compatible, the video signal receiver generates suitable low frame-rate signals as well as the high frame-rate signals, thereby accommodating both legacy as well as newer equipment.

Abstract: Watermark information (denoted WM) consists of several symbols which are embedded continuously by reference sequence modulation in an audio or a video signal. At decoder site the WM is regained using correlation of the received signal with a corresponding reference sequence. The symbols form watermark data frames. The invention uses for the bit values ‘zero’ and ‘one’ in each payload symbol and for each payload symbol in a watermark data frame different reference sequences, without using synchronisation symbols. A logarithmic search is performed in the WM decoder to reduce the numbers of correlations to be calculated. The invention makes watermarking of critical sound signals much more robust.

  • Patent number: 7734821
Abstract: An improved loss recovery method for coding streaming media classifies each data unit in the media stream as an independent data unit (I unit), a remotely predicted unit (R unit) or a predicted data unit (P unit). Each of these units is organized into independent segments having an I unit, multiple P units and R units interspersed among the P units. The beginning of each segment is the start of a random access point, while each R unit provides a loss recovery point that can be placed independently of the I unit. This approach separates the random access point from the loss recovery points provided by the R units, and makes the stream more impervious to data losses without substantially impacting coding efficiency. The most important data units are transmitted with the most reliability to ensure that the majority of the data received by the client is usable. The I units are the least sensitive to transmission losses because they are coded using only their own data.

Abstract: Systems and methods for video communication are described. In one aspect, network bandwidth conditions are estimated. Bi-level or full-color video is then transmitted over the network at transmission bit rates that are controlled as a function of the estimated bandwidth conditions. To this end, network bandwidth capability is periodically probed to identify similar, additional, or decreased bandwidth capabilities as compared to the estimated bandwidth conditions. Decisions to hold, decrease, or increase the video transmission bit rate are made based on the estimated bandwidth conditions in view of the probing operations. When the transmission bit rate is increased or decreased, the transmission bit rate is calculated to target an upper or lower bit rate, both of which are indicated by the estimated bandwidth conditions. Bi-level video communication is switched to full-color video transmission, or vice versa, when the video transmission bit rate respectively reaches the upper bit rate or the lower bit rate.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of processing a digital video data signal (DVS) in order to insert binary shape data into the digital video data signal. Such a method is used for processing the digital video data signal containing data relating to rectangular pictures, and segmented video data signals (SVS) provided by a segmentation step (SEG) of the digital video data signal, a segmented video data signal containing a video object (VO) which is a region of the rectangular picture. Said method of processing comprises the steps of identifying (ID) with an identifier to which video object of the segmented video data signals (SVS) a pixel of the rectangular picture belongs, inserting (INS) the identifiers into the digital video data signal so as to form a modified digital video data signal (DVSm), and encoding (ENC) the modified digital video data signal using a video-object-based encoding framework so as to obtain an encoded data signal (ES).

Abstract: In order to produce a decoded image substantially identical to an original image by processing a small amount of data, utilizing a thinning circuit (subsampler) a level of compression data obtained by extracting 9 pixels of an original image by 1 pixel is limited by a level limiting circuit by extracting 2 bits thereof from an MSB. In a local decoder, the original image is predicted based on correction data to output a predicted values thereof. Then, in an error calculator, a prediction error of the predicted values with respect to the original image is calculated. The compression data is corrected by a correcting circuit in such a manner that this prediction error becomes small.

  • Patent number: 6330036
Abstract: The present invention provides a digital video receiving apparatus for displaying a plurality of digital TV pictures on a plurality of receiving terminal apparatuses. The digital video receiving apparatus includes a tuner for extracting the received digital TV multiplexed signal, a demodulator for decoding the digital signals provided from the tuner, a demultiplexer for demultiplexing the multiplexed signals outputted from the demodulator to obtain a bit stream including a video signal, an audio signal and a data signal. The digital video receiving apparatus further includes a video decoder, an audio decoder and a data decoder for decoding signals outputted from the demultiplexer. The digital video receiving apparatus decodes the input multiplexed digital TV signal and outputs a video signal, an audio signal and a data signal corresponding to respective programs.

  • Patent number: 6252989
Abstract: A foveated imaging system, which can be implemented on a general purpose computer and greatly reduces the transmission bandwidth of images has been developed. This system has demonstrated that significant reductions in bandwidth can be achieved while still maintaining access to high detail at any point in an image. The system is implemented with conventional computer, display, and camera hardware. It utilizes novel algorithms for image coding and decoding that are superior both in degree of compression and in perceived image quality and is more flexible and adaptable to different bandwidth requirements and communications applications than previous systems. The system utilizes novel methods of incorporating human perceptual properties into the coding the decoding algorithms providing superior foveation. One version of the system includes a simple, inexpensive, parallel pipeline architecture, which enhances the capability for conventional and foveated data compression.

  • Patent number: 6215530
Abstract: Two additional structures for addition to the Digital Video Broadcasters (DVB) Service Information (SI) for implementation of the MPEG-2 Systems Standard (ISO/IEC 13818-1) are provided: the Logical Channel Table (LCT) and the Composite Channel Table (CCT). The LCT provides the mapping between a Logical Channel Number (LCN) representing a service and the transport stream(TSID)/program number (PN) on which the service can be found. LCT entries may designate either simple conventional channels or Composite Channels. The LCT contains a Composite Channel Indicator (CCI), which when set to ‘1’, indicates that the selected channel is a composite channel. In this case, the LCT entry gives the home channel of the Composite Channel, which provides the CCT to the decoder so that the tuner can be retuned to the actual program designated in the CCT for current viewing.

  • Patent number: RE37508
Abstract: The invention provides a method and apparatus for processing video data signals to generate a time division multiplexed video signal which incorporates a maxima number of fields from successive selected video input signals. The invention provides dual video decoder channels associated synchronisation circuits for generating an early synchronisation signal. The early synchronisation signals are applied to control inputs of the video decoders to enable reading of their output earlier than would normally be possible, avoiding delays in the combining of successive fields of video information in the video TDM signal. The provision of dual channels avoids delays due to lack of synchronisation between the different video sources.
