  • Patent number: 6862278
Abstract: A system and method are disclosed for parallel compression and decompression of a bitstream. For compression, the bitstream is separated into a plurality of components, and the components are encoded using a compression algorithm. Packets are then constructed from the encoded components. At least one packet is associated with each encoded component and comprises header information and encoded data. The packets are combined into a packetized encoded bitstream. For decompression, the packets are separated from the packetized encoded bitstream using the header information. The packets are then decoded in parallel using a decompression algorithm to recover the encoded data. The plurality of components are reconstructed from the recovered encoded data and combined to recover the bitstream.

  • Patent number: 6788811
Abstract: A coding apparatus which can simplify a coding circuit and also simplify the processing of quantization. Image data that consists of R-, G-, and B-color components read from a scanner into buffers is subjected to transformation using a position correlation for each of RGB in position-correlation transformation sections. The DC component of each of the components is then color-converted in a color conversion section to be a DC lightness signal and DC color signals, and the signals are quantized in a quantization section and a coding section. Whereas, the AC components of each of the components are subjected to quantization in a first step in an AC component quantization section, and further to color conversion in a color conversion section to be an AC lightness signal and AC color signals. The signals are quantized in a second step in a quantization section and a coding section.

  • Patent number: 6724939
Abstract: A decoder includes an indexing and thresholding stage that receives a compressed image matrix and produces therefrom a signal that is based on a comparison of at least one element in the compressed image matrix with a predetermined threshold value. A transform stage is coupled to receive the signal from an output of the indexing and thresholding stage, wherein the transform stage selectively decodes the compressed image matrix based on the signal. A row column index for each coefficient in a DCT matrix is used, together with a threshold value, to access each coefficient, and decide if the entry is greater than the threshold value. This information is used by an IDCT decoder to avoid unnecessary MAC operations for those entries with values below the threshold value. By not performing the IDCT on the DCT matrix values below the threshold value, the computational requirement of the decoder is significantly reduced, thereby reducing the computational speed requirement for the decoder.

  • Patent number: 6611274
Abstract: The color of a pixel is represented in a pixel storage word, wherein color coordinate data and intensity data are coded separately in two fields of the pixel storage word, the color field and the intensity field. This permits a range of colors to be represented in a relatively small number of bits. In one embodiment of the invention, each of the three color coordinates of an input color is coded separately. The coded color components are concatenated and placed in a coded color field of the pixel storage word. In another embodiment of the invention, the color coordinate data is encoded as a color index, a binary value which maps to color coordinate data according to a predefined color table. Intensity data is also encoded with a binary value. The coded intensity can represent the intensity directly, or can be an index to intensity data stored in a predetermined intensity table.

  • Patent number: 6567117
Abstract: In a regulation of a total image quality for an encoded picture, parameter conversion data which define applicable coding bit rates and coding frame rates for each image format are previously stored in a storage 13. An image quality regulating parameter is input through a parameter input section 11 and is used as a key in an image quality regulator 12 to make a reference to the parameter conversion data in the storage 13 in order to determine a coding frame rate and an image format. By delivering the coding frame rate and the image format to picture encoding means, a regulation of a total image quality is achieved through a single operation without independently operating two parameters, the image format and the frame rate.

  • Patent number: 6345125
Abstract: A multiple description (MD) joint source-channel (JSC) encoder in accordance with the invention encodes n components of a signal for transmission over in channels of a communication medium. In illustrative embodiments, the invention provides optimal or near-optimal transforms for applications in which at least one of n and m is greater than two, and applications in which the failure probabilities of the m channels are non-independent and non-equivalent. The signal to be encoded may be a data signal, a speech signal, an audio signal, an image signal, a video signal or other type of signal, and each of the m channels may correspond to a packet or a group of packets to be transmitted over the medium. A given n×m transform implemented by the MD JSC encoder may be in the form of a cascade structure of several transforms each having dimension less than n×m. The transform may also be configured to provide a substantially equivalent rate for each of the m channels.
