Patent number: 7557833Abstract: A signal-recording-and-reproducing portion records an image signal DVb of a variable frame-rate picked-up image generated by an image signal generation portion. When instructed to reproduce the image signal, the recorded signal is reproduced and supplied to a frame rate conversion portion as an image signal DVr. The frame rate conversion portion converts the image signals DVb and DVr to a display frame rate and supplies them to a monitor image signal generation portion as image signals DVb? and DVr?. The monitor image signal generation portion then generates a monitor image displaying images based on the image signals DVb? and DVr? on a screen. An adjustment of the frame rate referring to reproduced image displayed together with an image that is being shot allows an image signal to be easily generated so that a motion of a subject can be matched to a desired speed at the reproduction thereof.Type: GrantFiled: July 16, 2004Date of Patent: July 7, 2009Assignee: Sony CorporationInventor: Hiroshi Okawa

Publication number: 20040131116Abstract: In the case that the amount of a code generated in one frame is controlled, when the picture quality is optimized using an adaptive quantization, even if a scene change occurs between two frames, the adaptive quantization can be accurately performed. When data for eight lines that compose a macro block of only a first field of an N-th picture is stored in a buffer, the calculation of activities of macro blocks of the first field is started. Corresponding to the activities of the first field, an average activity is calculated. The average activity of the first field is applied to the first field and the second field of the N-th picture. As a result, a normalized activity of the N-th picture is calculated. Corresponding to the normalized activity, a quantizer scale mqaunt in consideration of a visual characteristic is calculated. Thus, the N-th picture is adaptively quantized.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 26, 2003Publication date: July 8, 2004Inventors: Akira Sugiyama, Haruo Togashi

Patent number: 6353632Abstract: The running real time length of combined video and audio signal programs is shortened or lengthened by deleting or repeating individual fields or frames and corresponding amounts of audio segments. The video and audio portions of the programming material are separated and subjected to processing through a pair of program time changing units. The video portion is processed by deleting individual fields or frames on a manual, periodic or automatic basis. Manual deletion is done by an operator observing the program material on a monitor. Periodic deletion is performed automatically after the operator specifies the total amount of time (or number of fields or frames) to be deleted, with every ith frame or field deleted regardless of content. Automatic deletion is done in a fashion similar to periodic deletion, but the fields or frames are examined and are deleted on the basis of the amount of between frame motion.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1999Date of Patent: March 5, 2002Assignee: Prime ImageInventors: Leonard Keith Moeller, Christopher Scott Gifford, William B. Patent number: 6304297Abstract: A method and apparatus for manipulating the display update rate of video signals to minimize the adverse visual effects caused by adding or deleting frames begins by determining a need value for manipulation of the display update rate. The need value corresponds to increasing drift between the display update rate and the refresh rate. As such, as the drift increases between the display update rate and the refresh rate, the need value increases correspondingly. Next, an appropriateness value for manipulation of the display update rate is determined based on image content. In essence, the appropriateness value is determining whether, if a frame addition or deletion were to occur, would it occur at a point that would produce minimal adverse visual effects. Based on a relationship between the need value and the appropriateness value, the display update rate is manipulated by adding or deleting a frame.Type: GrantFiled: July 21, 1998Date of Patent: October 16, 2001Assignee: ATI Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Philip L.
