The apparatus may include an unstructured data-based topic generator configured to generate a topic model including an unstructured data-based topic based on content and unstructured data, a viewer group analyzer configured to analyze a characteristic of a viewer group including a viewer of the content based on a social network of the viewer and viewing situation information of the viewer, a multifaceted topic generator configured to generate a multifaceted topic based on the topic model and the characteristic of the viewer group, a content divider configured to divide the content into a plurality of scenes, and a tagger configured to tag the multifaceted topic to the scenes.

Abstract: Methods, systems and devices for characterizing user viewing behavior are described. A method of tracking user viewing includes presenting media content to a user via a media device, the media content including closed-caption information, and determining that a user has initiated, at a first time, a user interface event (e.g., a “trick-mode” event) that modifies a playback rate of the media content. An offset time is determined, corresponding to a difference between the first time and a second time corresponding to an occurrence of a unique string within the closed-caption information Viewing behavior of the user is then characterized based on the media content, the offset time relative to the unique string, and an event type associated with the user interface event.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide apparatuses, systems and methods for distributing public information. For example, some embodiments of the invention provide methods for determining an appropriate set of addresses to which to distribute an alert. One such exemplary method comprises maintaining a directory of alert gateways. The directory can comprise a plurality of directory entries, and each directory entry can be associated with a particular alert gateway. Each directory entry can also comprise at least one gateway characteristic associated with that alert gateway. In some cases, a gateway characteristic can include information to enable the alert distribution device to determine whether a given alert should be transmitted to the alert gateway.

The method may further include obtaining, at the device, the text from the transcription system and presenting, by the device, the text generated by the transcription system in real-time. An embodiment operates by providing a program for display on a user device. A plurality of closed captioning requests associated with the program are determined. It is determined that the plurality of closed captioning requests exceed a first threshold. A start time and an end time corresponding to the plurality of closed captioning requests are determined. Closed captioning corresponding to the program is provided for display between the start time and the end time.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided herein for adapting, when multiple users are consuming a media asset on a primary device, the size of subtitles presented on the primary device upon determining that a user located closer to the primary device (i.e., first user) than a user farthest from the primary device (i.e., second user) is discontent with the size of the subtitles. The media guidance application may determine that there is a secondary device, associated with and in the vicinity of the second user, that is suitable for displaying subtitles. The media guidance application may, upon determining that the second user is currently not using the secondary device, present subtitles for the second user on the secondary device. The media guidance application may then adjust the size of the subtitles presented with the media asset on the primary device to a size more suited for the first user.

The content to be displayed at a later time is displayed via the active screen display when the computer is one of turned off and inactive.

Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for configuring software resource for playing network programs. A request for downloading network programs transmitted by a user terminal to a network server includes the configuration information of software resources at the user terminal. After comparing and balancing the software resources required for playing network programs and the software resources at the user terminal, the network server transmits to the user terminal the software resource that is required for playing programs but are absent at the user terminal. The user terminal combines the received software resource with the local software resources to play the downloaded network programs. The user terminal can sufficiently configure the software resources required for playing network programs only by attachedly transmit the configuration information of software resources that the user terminal has when transmitting a request for downloading network programs.

A set-top box (STB) may receive content from multiple different networks and/or service providers, and closed caption data may be formatted differently in content received from the various networks and/or service providers. The STB may identify a relevant standard with which to process closed caption data in a received content stream based upon an identification of the network and/or provider from which the content stream is received, and the STB may extract and render closed caption data using a process associated with the identified network and/or provider.

Abstract: Embodiments are directed towards extracting an informational banner from a first source and combining it with video content from a second source. The informational banner may be a news ticker, a scoreboard, an informational window of a program, etc. The informational banner is selected or identified from the first source using one or more different automated or user-selectable methods. The extracted informational banner is combined with video content from the second source at a display location that is automatically determined or selected by a user. The combined content is then provided to a display device for presentation to the user.

Abstract: Techniques are presented herein to monitor a plurality of big data sources in order to dynamically identify keywords. The big data sources are analyzed to classify the keywords as related to either a technical problem or to a solution to the technical problem. An embodiment operates by accessing user behavior information for a program. It is determined, based on the user behavior information, that multiple closed captioning requests overlap during a portion of the program. A start time indicating when to begin and an end time indicating when to end display of closed captioning information for the overlapping portion is calculated. The program including the start time and the end time corresponding to the overlapping portion is provided for playback, wherein during a playback of the program, the closed captioning information is automatically displayed between the start time and the end time.

Abstract: Systems and methods for identifying and locating related content using natural language processing are generally disclosed herein. One embodiment includes an HTML5/JavaScript user interface configured to execute scripting commands to perform natural language processing and related content searches, and to provide a dynamic interface that enables both user-interactive and automatic methods of obtaining and displaying related content. The natural language processing may extract one or more context-sensitive key terms of text associated with a set of content. Related content may be located and identified using keyword searches that include the context-sensitive key terms. For example, text associated with video of a first content, such as text originating from subtitles or closed captioning, may be used to perform searches and locate related content such as a video of a second content, or text of a third content.

The user interface allows a user to narrow down the large amount of Internet-delivered media in a systematic way according to criteria that interests a user.

Abstract: A system identifies a first document that includes a number of first images, identifies a second document that includes a number of second images, and forms a cluster based on a relationship between the first document and the second document. The system identifies a first caption associated with one of the first images, identifies a second caption associated with one of the second images, selects the one of the first images or the one of the second images as a representative image for the cluster based on the first caption or the second caption, and associates the representative image with the cluster.

Abstract: Methods and systems are described herein for quickly and easily displaying supplemental information about an event occurring in a media asset. In some embodiments, a media application may use a content-recognition module to determine the context of an event and distribute itemized tasks to multiple entities in order to generate the supplemental information about the event.
