Patent number: 5923379Abstract: A system for providing a user controllable picture-in-picture formatted signal to a television is provided with a fast modem that interconnects the system with a computer network, such as the Internet. In order to allow a user to interact with the Internet, yet still enjoy video programming, the system has a picture-in-picture selection that a user controls to determine which video source (e.g., digital satellite signal, digital video disk signal, Internet graphics) will form the main picture displayed on the television, and which will form the picture-in-picture. A conventional television may be used with the system to display the signal, since it is already formatted in a picture-in-picture format at the output of the system.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1996Date of Patent: July 13, 1999Assignee: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.Inventor: James T. Patent number: 5907369Abstract: A television system utilizes a common signal processing unit (e.g., a common chrominance demodulator) for processing a combined video signal suitable for coupling to a display device for producing an image having a portion attributable to a main video signal and a portion attributable to an auxiliary video signal. If the common signal processing unit relies upon the color information (e.g., color burst) contained in the main video signal, and the main signal is either non-existent or lacking such color information, then a substitute color information signal will be generated so that the combined video signal may be processed to roduce a color auxiliary image, and a monochrome (or non-existent) main image.Type: GrantFiled: September 10, 1996Date of Patent: May 25, 1999Assignee: Thomson Consumer Electronics, Inc.Inventors: Mark Francis Rumreich, Ronald Thomas Keen

Patent number: 5850267Abstract: To provide an improved non-additive mixer, a first mixer mixes first and second video signals according to a mixer control signal derived in a new way. The first and second video signals are applied, respectively, to first and second chrominance (blocking) filters. The resulting first and second luminance signals are applied, respectively, to first and second summing circuits, where offsets may be applied to either or both of them. The difference is then taken between the first offset luminance signal and the second offset luminance signal to produce a difference luminance signal. The difference luminance signal is then multiplied by a gain control signal to produce the mixer control signal. The mixer control signal can also be used to control a second mixer, thereby providing a channel for keying information that is non-additively mixed according to the luminance content of the video signal that the key information is associated with.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1993Date of Patent: December 15, 1998Assignee: Tektronix, Inc.Inventors: John Abt, James A. Patent number: 5748256Abstract: The subtitle data encoding apparatus according to the present invention is used in a video image transmission system. The apparatus creates loading blocks from relative position information by sampling an input bit stream at a frame interval. The loading block corresponds to a pixel data block and contains changeover position information which updates a change position, delays the update operation and sets the length of the delay. The address used to access a color lookup table for displaying subtitle data is changeable at the change position to access different display data stored therein. The pixel data block is encoded from subtitle data and the loading blocks and pixel data blocks are combined for transmission. The changeover position information can also be used to progress a color-wipe operation.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 1996Date of Patent: May 5, 1998Assignee: Sony CorporationInventor: Ikuo Tsukagoshi

Patent number: 5731847Abstract: Encoding and decoding of subtitle data is performed in real time. A buffer regulates a flow rate of the subtitle data to ensure that the appropriate subtitles are superimposed with the correct video picture. In encoding, subtitles are generated in correspondence to a video picture. The subtitles are separately encoded and multiplexed with the video picture for transmission. Upon decoding, the subtitles are selected at a time which corresponds to the display of the corresponding video picture. Since the subtitles are processed separately from the video data, the subtitles may be manipulated with great control; thus providing more flexibility in encoding and decoding.Type: GrantFiled: March 19, 1996Date of Patent: March 24, 1998Assignee: Sony CorporationInventor: Ikuo Tsukagoshi

Patent number: 5491517Abstract: A system and method which mixes images, such as an advertisement, with a video stream of action occurring within a relatively unchanging space, such as a playing field, is disclosed. The system utilizes a model of the background space to change the video stream so as to include the image at some location within the background space. It includes a video frame grabber and an image implantation system. The frame grabber grabs a single frame of the video signal at one time. The image implantation system typically implants the grabbed image into the frame onto a predefined portion of a preselected one of the surfaces of the background space if the portion is shown in the frame. To determine the location of the portion to have implantation, the image implantation system includes a unit for receiving a) a flat model of the fixed surfaces and b) an image mask indicating the portion of the flat model onto which the image is to be mixed.Type: GrantFiled: January 19, 1995Date of Patent: February 13, 1996Assignee: Scitex America CorporationInventors: Haim Kreitman, Dan Bar-El, Yoel Amir, Ehud Tirosh

Patent number: 5361101Abstract: An RGB preamplifier for a video display includes respective multipliers independently operable for adjusting the contrast of input primary and secondary video signals. The contrast adjusted video signals are added to form a combined display signal, the combined signal being applied to the first inputs of primary and secondary comparators each of which is also supplied with a respective reference DC level. The primary and secondary video signals are alternately nulled at horizontal line rate by nulling the corresponding multipliers. The primary comparator samples the combined signal when the secondary signal is nulled for clamping the DC level of the primary signal in relation to the primary reference DC level and the secondary comparator samples the combined signal when the primary signal is nulled for clamping the DC level of the secondary signal in relation to the secondary reference DC level.Type: GrantFiled: November 19, 1993Date of Patent: November 1, 1994Assignee: Zenith Electronics CorporationInventor: Khosro M.
