Abstract: A method of producing a color image using a display comprised of pixels comprising red, green and blue primary color subpixels. The method comprises reducing the color gamut and increasing the brightness of the image relative to a base level, decreasing power to the display to reduce the brightness of the image, restoring color to the image to approximately the base level by modifying image pixel data using a three-dimensional lookup table to produce output image pixel data, and communicating the output image pixel data to the display. The display may be an LCD display, an LED display, an OLED display, a plasma display, and a DMD projector. Reducing the color gamut and increasing the brightness of the image may be accomplished by adding white to the image. The white may be added adaptively according to an algorithm by which the amount of white added decreases with increasing color saturation.

The pixels of a displayable image may also include a white component derived from the RGB components. An illumination reduction algorithm is implemented to determine the highest RGB (or RGBW) components from any of the pixels of the displayable image. The highest RGB (or RGBW) components can be determined from any combination of the same or different pixels of the displayable image. The illumination reduction algorithm then divides each of the highest RGB (or RGBW) components by a maximum brightness value to generate respective RGB (or RGBW) component factors. Abstract: Specific image quality adjustment of an image is performed according to a setting made by a user, and contrast compensation is performed such that a brightness is kept unchanged at the center of a specific color region larger than a predetermined size, regardless of the setting of the image quality adjustment. The image quality adjustment is performed by selecting one of a plurality of filters with different frequency characteristics according to the setting of the image quality adjustment, and then performing filter processing on the image by using the selected filter. The contrast compensation is performed upon the image that has undergone the filter processing, by using a contrast compensation value related to the selected filter.

  • Patent number: 8525934
Abstract: Brightness expression without solid white pattern is enabled, and video expression with an improved black level is achieved. A distortion module (5) reduces the luminance of a backlight source according to the histogram of the video signal so that the contrast may be a predetermined target one. A configuration design unit (13) sets the gain according to the luminance level (BLreduced) of the backlight source selected by the distortion module (5). When setting the gain, the luminance level (BLref) for reference of the backlight source preset according to the video feature value is referenced. If the video feature value meets a predetermined condition, the input video signal is always amplified with the gain. If not, depending on the relation between the BLreduced and the BLref, the input video signal is amplified or not.

  • Patent number: 8520022
Abstract: Display functions in an electronic device may comprise combining runtime color adjustments with brightness adjustments triggered by ambient light detection. Light sensors may be utilized to detect ambient lighting conditions, which may cause adjustment of brightness level applicable to a display (or screen) of the electronic device. The adjustment of brightness level may then be combined with adjustment of contrast level that may also be applicable to display functions. In this regard, a particular contrast level may be selected based on the detected ambient lighting conditions—e.g., by mapping various contrast levels to preconfigured ambient lighting levels. The contrast adjustment may comprise adjusting colors and/or sharpness. Using contrast adjustments, in conjunction with the brightness adjustments, may allow for achieving the same levels of readability with less brightness, and/or for increased readability with the same brightness.
