Abstract: A television for storing and displaying a stored still picture, which includes: a memory for storing a still picture of a desired scene; a decoder for separating a video signal of a broadcast channel into an RGB signal and a synchronizing signal; a synchronizing signal detector for outputting a detection signal according to the existence of the synchronizing signal; a microcomputer for controlling so that the RGB signal output from the decoder can be displayed on a picture tube by recognizing the detection signal when a normal broadcast signal is input and so that the still picture stored in the memory can be displayed on the picture tube when a normal broadcast signal is not input. Thus, if a broadcast channel goes off the air, or a channel which is not on the air is selected, a selected picture is retrieved from the memory and displayed on the television screen, thereby reducing eye fatigue.

Abstract: A channel selection apparatus is provided for allowing receipt of signals broadcast according to the NTSC, SECAM and PAL broadcast modes. A controller discriminates the signal's broadcast mode based on the horizontal sync signal included in the received signal and alters a circuit connection path. Accordingly, a desired broadcast mode can be automatically selected without requiring any particular switch manipulation by a user. Further, a video signal processing path is separated from a sound signal processing path, in order to obtain excellent sound quality, even when receiving a stereo broadcast. Also, it is possible to easily automate the manufacturing process for the apparatus, thereby improving productivity.

  • Patent number: 5640670
Abstract: A direct broadcast satellite sends subscribers signals received from an earth-station transmitter and typically having a 10 MHz bandwidth, 6 MHz for an analog video station and 4 MHz for up to 24 digital audio stations. When a subscriber selects one of the audio stations, an FM demodulator recovers the 10 MHz signal; a variable gain amplifier amplifies the received signal; and an A/D converter digitizes the amplified signal at (e.g.) 24.576 MHz. A digital synthesizer produces trigonometric functions (sine, cosine) at (e.g.) 24.576 MHz, and mixers downconvert the signals to baseband. The sampling frequency is then reduced to 256 KHz, twice the digital audio signal baud rate. In response to the 256 KHz signals, a first servo varies a VCO frequency to obtain a regulation by the A/D converter of the digitizing frequency at 24.576 MHz and another servo regulates the frequency of the trigonometric functions.

  • Patent number: 5532762
Abstract: A digital audio broadcast receiving apparatus that minimizes a frequency at which the user switches between NICAM audio and analog audio. When a reserve audio switching flag C4 is "H" it indicates that analog audio and NICAM audio represent the same program, in which NICAM audio, which provides better sound quality, is automatically selected. If a broadcast receiving condition deteriorates, analog audio is automatically selected. Conversely, when the flag C4 is "L", it indicates that NICAM audio and analog audio represent two different programs. In this case, analog audio that is in synchronization with video is automatically selected. At this moment, it is possible that the user intentionally selects NICAM audio, which is not related to video, so that NICAM audio is not switched to analog audio even if NICAM audio has some noise. An audio switching point is shifted by changing a threshold for determining PCM data error rate or by changing a sampling time.

  • Patent number: 5497206
Abstract: A circuit for controlling the audio signal output of a television, in which it is determined whether video and audio signals are input from an external source, such as a video tape recorder. If so, then the audio output signals are properly controlled according to whether the audio signal are mono or stereo-type signals. The circuit includes an audio input state detecting circuit for determining the audio input state by employing an exclusive OR gate and at least two analog/digital converters, and a video signal detecting circuit for detecting whether or not video signals are input. A switching circuit performs switching operations through an AND gate which logically combines the output of the audio signal state detecting circuit and the output of the video state detecting circuit. Therefore, even in the case where the audio signal is a mono-type signal, a quasi-stereo sound is output through both left and right speakers.

The system can enhance the error correction capability by receiving D2 MAC signals interleaved in units of packets and de-interleaving audio data in a normal sequence.

  • Patent number: 5323277
Abstract: A sound recording apparatus for use in video tape recorders, for equalizing a sound signal before the sound signal is recorded onto a recording medium includes an operational amplifier where the sound signal is inputted to its first input terminal, a feedback resistor connected to an output terminal and a second input terminal of the operational amplifier, and a simulated inductor circuit connected to the second input terminal of the operational amplifier. The simulated inductor circuit has a buffer where a predetermined bias is provided to its input. Between an output of the buffer and the second input terminal of the operational amplifier is connected an impedance network whose circuit constant is switched by a switch which operates according to a recording speed mode of the video tape recorder. This switching changes an equalizing characteristic of the amplifier.
