Abstract: The invention provides a two-panel color management system for projection display applications, wherein color sequencing is accomplished using achromatic beam switching and static color separation. In a preferred embodiment, a liquid-crystal polarization switch alternates a polarization of an input light beam between two orthogonal states. A polarization beam splitter directs the beam comprising three primary color components alternately along a first and second paths, wherein first and second different secondary color filters are disposed for forming first and second secondary colored beams, each having two different primary color components. A dichroic color separator alternately receives the first and second secondary colored beams, separates their primary color components and directs them to first and second imager panels. Abstract: An APL detection unit detects the APL for each unit field time period of an input video signal, and a light source control data production unit produces, depending on the results of the APL detection, a light source control signal at a minimum level which can stably drive a light source when the APL is 0% up to a predetermined value A1, a light source control signal at a maximum level which can stably drive the light source when the APL is a predetermined value A2 up to 100%, and a light source control signal which dynamically varies depending on the APL when the APL is between the predetermined value A1 and the predetermined value A2, to drive the light source on the basis of the light source control signal. As a result, it is possible to mitigate the lack of a contrast feeling and the occurrence of a floating blackness, as well as to improve the reliability of the light source.

Abstract: A display includes a front panel and a back panel with a light control material in between. One of the panels includes a rigid substrate, for example made of glass or rigid plastic. The other of the panels includes a flexible substrate, for example made of a flexible plastic film. The panel with the flexible substrate may be made by a roll-to-roll process, with various fabrication operations formed while the flexible substrate is still part of a web of material. The panel with the rigid substrate may be separately fabricated, then combined with the other panel on the web through a pick and place operation that accurately locates the front panel relative to the back panel. The display may be any of a variety of displays, such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs), and electroluminescent displays, such as polymer light emitting devices (PLEDs) and organic light emitting devices (OLEDs).

Abstract: There is provided a display device in which an optical efficiency is improved using a color drum. The display device includes a road lens for totally reflecting an incident light and changing a path of the light. The display device further includes a color drum having a plurality of cell filters arranged cylindrically to face the path of the light outputted from the road lens. Here, the cell filters are in a linear shape. Since the light reflected by the color drum is not lost to the outside, the light efficiency can be enhanced. According to the invention, the linear scroll is possible due to the cell filters that are in the linear shape, so that signal process algorithm can be simplified.

Abstract: A portable computer system incorporating a rear projection display. The rear projection display is housed in a display enclosure that is movable between an open and closed position, and incorporates either a pliable or deformable projection surface or a projection surface formed of multiple rigid components. When the display enclosure is open, the projection surface is configured to expand beyond the form factor dimensions of the base portion of the portable computer. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the projection surface is a pliable material that can be safely deformed or collapsed within the display enclosure when it is closed. The rear projection display thereby allows the effective viewing area of a portable computer display to be increased without negatively impacting the form factor dimensions or weight of the portable computer.

The polarization recapture system transmits light having a first polarization as polarized light output and recycles light having a second polarization orthogonal to the first polarization. The light having the second polarization is reflected by the transmitting/reflecting polarizer back into the tunnel integrator. The polarization recapture system recycles the light having the second polarization by reflecting and reorienting the light having the second polarization to light of the first polarization.
