    Abstract: A device for recording a motion picture film and a device for projecting a motion picture film susceptible to generation of low noise due to film feed are provided. A motion picture film 10 is fed on the frame basis so that the film is fed as it is clamped between an idler 45 and a rotary drum 48 and so that the film feed is stopped as a voice coil 43 is driven for displacing the idler 45 away from the rotary drum 48. A recording unit 30 records a frame image of the motion picture film each time the film feed is halted. Recording may be made in this manner under the state of extremely low noise level due to film feed. Film feed is made in a similar manner during projection of each frame image, and each frame image is also projected by a projection unit 70 each time the film feed is halted. Projection may also be made in this manner under the state of extremely low noise level due to film feed.

    Abstract: A film drive control system includes a light source that directs a beam at a photographic filmstrip and a sensor located such that it detects this light source depending on whether or not the light source is blocked by the passage of the photographic filmstrip. The filmstrip includes perforations that indicate frame exposure areas. The filmstrip is advanced one frame at a time by first moving the film forward at a relatively high velocity until the leading edge of the perforation passes the sensor, then reducing the velocity in the forward direction until the trailing edge of the perforation passes the sensor. The filmstrip is then moved in the film reverse direction at a reduced velocity until the trailing edge again passes by the sensor, at which time the filmstrip is halted.

    Abstract: Film transport device with a film transport sprocket driven by a drive motor whose teeth engage the holes in a motion picture film with play and transport the latter stepwise one frame at a time and final-position it at a film gate. The film transport steps are subdivided into a transport phase (t.sub.T) and a position-adjusting phase (t.sub.R) in which the film is final-positioned accurately. The transport phase (t.sub.T) is divided into a very short acceleration phase (t.sub.1, t.sub.2) in which a high torque setting (M.sub.S1) is set with a steep acceleration rise (t.sub.1), and a long continuous drive and braking phase (t.sub.3, t.sub.4), whose time constant is a multiple of the acceleration phase (t.sub.1, t.sub.2). This ensures minimum transport noise and film-protective transport.

    Abstract: A projector having a rolling loop film transport mechanism is provided with a film decelerating cam unit that is located in advance of the aperture of the projector. Deceleration pins carried by a pair of vertically spaced arms that project from the cam unit engage in upper and lower marginal perforations in the film and travel with the film towards the aperture and decelerate the film as each frame is advanced. The cam unit includes two cams, one of which causes the decelerating motion of the pins, and a return motion in the reverse direction, while the other cam causes the pins to advance and retract into and from the film path respectively. By positively retracting the pins, their return movement against the direction of film travel can take place independent of the motion of the film. As compared with the prior art, acceleration forces and resultant stresses on the cam are reduced and the cam unit can operate at higher frame rates and/or with smaller rotor gaps.

    Abstract: A projector is described, of the type wherein a motor-driven sprocket wheel cyclically pulls a film frame-by-frame through a film gate, by applying a large accelerating voltage at the beginning of each cycle, followed by a decelerating voltage and a fine-positioning sequence, which assures that the film will lie close to the final position and be moving slowly at the beginning of the fine-positioning sequence. A determination is made as to whether the film has moved a predetermined distance by a predetermined time after the beginning of each cycle, and the accelerating voltage for the next cycle may be changed to cause such predetermined movement at that predetermined time for subsequent cycles.

    Abstract: A rotary shutter adapted to be used in an electronic still camera comprises a rotatable shutter having shutter openings which are variable in size. The shutter is rotated by an electric motor in order to open and close intermittently an exposure aperture of the camera. A phase detector for detecting the phase of rotation of the shutter member provides a series of phase signal, and cooperates with a signal generator for generating stop signals in synchronism with the phase signals when a particular shutter speed is selected and a circuit for braking the motor to stop the shutter member. Responsive to the particular shutter speed selecting operation, the shutter opening is opened to its maximum size and the rotary shutter is simultaneously stopped quickly in position so as to open fully the exposure aperture of the camera.

    Abstract: A film magazine for a motion picture camera contains apparatus for maintaining the tension in the film strip from the supply reel and in the film strip to the takeup reel, within predetermined limits, to permit start-and-stop operations of the camera while minimizing danger of damage to the film. The supply reel is connected to an eddy current brake, and a takeup reel is powered by a motor responsive to a tension control device. The eddy current brake on the supply reel provides braking torque of relatively high magnitude when the supply reel is large in diameter, and the braking torque reduces gradually to a minimum as the diameter reduces.Tension in the film strip leading to the takeup reel is controlled by a tension measuring device which acts to vary the power delivered to the motor driving the takeup reel, to obtain uniform winding tightness.

Responsive to varying rates of travel of the film strip across a processing station provided in the cartridge as it is being transported between the paired spools to which respective ends of the film strip are attached, a variable-speed driving mechanism mounted externally of the cartridge controls the speed of the spool to establish a constant rate of travel of the film strip across the processing station at any particular instance even though the winding diameters of the film strip on the spools are ever being varied, so that a uniform application of a coating of processing fluid is effected along the length of the exposed film strip without the necessity of providing any particular constant speed device within the cartridge.
