Abstract: Improvement of speckling noise is discussed in which a central light beam received at a double-sided mirror is divided into a plurality of sub-beams. An intensity of these sub-beams decays from a second sub-beam to a last sub-beam of the plurality. Each sub-beam is also separated at the double-sided mirror by at least a first length, such as the coherence length or intrinsic divergence, and reflected toward a display screen. The configuration of the double-sided mirror focuses the sub-beams to converge with a first sub-beam on the display screen at different angles. The decreasing intensity and different angles of impact with the screen decreases the spatial coherence of the display light. The angle diversity and combination of multiple sub-beams having different intensities offers a non-time-averaging means to decrease speckle noise without downgrading the beam quality or display resolution.

The optical projection system includes: a relay lens group to produce an intermediate image from an image created by a display and to generate a first distortion in the intermediate image, a projection lens group to enlarge and project the intermediate image that passes through the relay lens group and to generate a second distortion in the projected image, and a reflector to reflect the image enlarged by the projection lens group to a screen at a wide viewing angle. The first and second distortions are used to compensate for a third distortion caused by the reflector.

  • Patent number: 7445340
Abstract: An illumination source includes a number of light emitting diodes (LEDs) operating at a first wavelength. Light from the LEDs illuminates a phosphor material that generates light at a second wavelength. A reflective polarizer transmits light at the second wavelength in a first polarization state and reflects light at the second wavelength in a second polarization state orthogonal to the first polarization state. The light at the second wavelength reflected by the reflective polarizer is directed back towards the phosphor material without an increase in angular range. In some embodiments the LEDs, having a conformal layer of phosphor material, are attached directly to the first surface of a liquid cooled plate. A liquid coolant contacts a second surface of the plate.

Abstract: A spatial light modulator comprises an array of micromirror devices each of which has a reflective and deflectable mirror plates. The mirror plates are moved between an ON and OFF state during operation, wherein the OFF state is a state wherein the mirror plate is not parallel to the substrate on which the mirror plate is formed. The micromirror device may have an ON state stopper for limiting the rotation of the mirror plate at the ON state angle, but does not have an OFF state stopper. The non-zero OFF state is achieved by attaching the mirror plate to a deformable hinge held by a hinge support that is curved at the natural resting state.

Abstract: An absorptive layer is added to an image display system. The absorptive layer is selected to compensate for tint in a black state of a displayed image. In a Liquid Crystal On Silicon (LCOS) based light engine, blue wavelengths may cause a predominate tint in black portions of an image (or an entirely black image is tinted blue), and the absorptive layer is calculated to absorb an amount of blue equivalent to the tint. The absorptive layer is, for example, an unbalanced magenta dichroic, or a yellow filter. The yellow filter may be placed at any point in the light chain, including input/output of a kernel, input/output of a projection lens, or portions of a light engine or display screen. An unbalanced magenta may be constructed by adding a yellow filter to an existing magenta dichroic in the kernel design.
