Abstract: A test pattern printed by a printer is assessed—without colorimetric equipment—to provide data used in recalibrating the printer. The assessment may be made by an unskilled operator, and can include discerning whether a particular pattern is visible in the printed test pattern, or whether a feature in the test pattern is relatively wider or narrower. From such assessment, needed changes to the printer's calibration data are inferred and implemented. A variety of other printer calibration techniques are disclosed. The technology is illustrated in the context of dye sublimation printers, and is particularly useful in optimizing printing of digitally-watermarked graphics.

Abstract: A method and system are provided to correct differences among multiple spectrophotometers. In one form, one spectrophotometer of a plurality that may be present in an image rendering system is treated as “primary”. Additional spectrophotometers are treated as “secondary”. The spectrum of a color from a secondary spectrophotometer is transformed by a linear transformation to an adjusted spectrum, which then is converted to L*a*b* (if desired) using standard techniques. The L*a*b* thus produced is, on average, substantially closer to the L*a*b* that the primary spectrophotometer would have produced when measuring the same color than it is to the L*a*b* that the secondary spectrophotometer would have produced without any correction. The linear transformation is generated by linear regression to minimize the spectral error, followed by non-linear optimization to minimize the error relative to a color difference metric—such as DeltaE 2000.

The first step involves the off-line characterization of the printing/image rendering system that will be used to extract the principal basis vectors from the experimental data. The second step involves the run-time mode, in which the pre-characterized basis vectors are used in conjunction with an optimal algorithm that will identify the media for re-calibration/re-characterization from the group of media set that the customer is interested to print. One exemplary technique may also include gradually transitioning from tracking a darklight color temperature below a low-luminosity transition point to tracking the first color temperature above the low-luminosity transition point. Another exemplary technique may include tracking a response curve for a specified chromaticity above a low-luminosity transition point.

  • Patent number: 7961247
Abstract: An apparatus and method for acquiring an image of a predetermined extract of a moving printed product employs at least one black-and-white camera with a two-dimensional electronic image sensor and one or more illumination devices suitable for pulse-like illumination. The illumination device has multiple light sources forming spectral groups that have different spectral compositions. The light sources are arranged in a pattern such that the light sources of each spectral group completely illuminate the area of observation of the camera. A control device switches the individual spectral groups of light sources on and off sequentially such that the area of observation of the camera is illuminated with a sequence of light pulses of different spectral compositions. During each light pulse, the predetermined extract on a printed product moves into the area of observation of the camera, and an image of extract is captured.

Abstract: In an image recording apparatus, shift times for shifting switching timings of light modulator elements are obtained so that rise times (U1) after input of output start signals to driving elements connected to respective light modulator elements of a spatial light modulator and fall times (D1) after input of output stop signals become a constant target rise time (U2) and a constant target fall time (D2). This makes it possible to suppress unevenness of the rise times and the fall times after correction of light amounts even if light modulator elements where the rise times and the fall times change by correction of light amounts are used and consequently, an image can be appropriately recorded without a complicate apparatus.

  • Patent number: RE42673
Abstract: The color management system comprises a state-space based model for a pixel element in a dynamically varying color marking device. A sensor measures the color of the printed output for construction of a selected set of sensitivity functions representative of color output relating to inputs. The gradients of the sensitivity functions are extracted and used to develop the corresponding discrete multivariable state-space model of the pixel element. More particularly, the model is constructed from the Jacobian matrix characterizing a change in measured color output for a change in input color values of the pixel. Extension of modeling methodology for a single pixel is applied to multiple pixel elements.
