  • Patent number: 11415812
Abstract: An optical system includes an arrangement of optical components including a first polarization-selective reflector (PSR) associated with a third surface of a first prism. The first prism includes an entrance surface having a normal corresponding to a first rectangular axis of the first PSR. The first prism includes a second surface perpendicular to the entrance surface, and has a normal corresponding to a second rectangular axis of the first PSR. The arrangement of optical components defines a light path propagating toward the first PSR, traversing the first PSR, then traversing in a first direction a second PSR, and then reflecting from a second direction from the second PSR in an output image direction. The second PSR is inclined with respect to the first PSR so the output image direction is oblique to the first and second rectangular axes of the first PSR.

  • Patent number: 8105678
Abstract: An optically variable device is disclosed having a substrate with an array of pyramidal structures formed upon it or within it. The structures are preferably formed by printing pyramids with an optically variable color-shifting ink using an Intaglio-like printing process. Alternatively the structure can be formed by embossing a layer of ink with positive pyramids so as to yield an array of positive embossed pyramids. Each of the structures form a pyramidal-like having at least three slanted faces and wherein one or more than one color is seen when viewing the pyramids vary as substrate is rotated at least 30 degrees about an axis orthogonal to the substrate. In order to see a color shift the device is rotated around the surface normal of the substrate, while keeping the angle of incidence to the light source the same, and keeping the viewing angle the same. Various forms of pyramids may be used, however pyramids with planar faces are most suitable.

Abstract: Optical elements, color combiners using the optical elements, and image projectors using the color combiners are described. The optical elements can be configured as color combiners that receive different wavelength spectrums of light and produce a combined light output that includes the different wavelength spectrums of light. The optical elements include a wavelength selective dichroic mirror that reflects a major portion of actinic light that can damage a reflective polarizer within the optical element. The wavelength selective dichroic mirror transmits a major portion of other wavelengths of light. The resulting color combiners using the optical element may have improved durability compared to a color combiner lacking the wavelength selective dichroic mirror. Image projectors using the color combiners can include reflective (including digital micro-mirror) or polarization (including liquid crystal) imaging modules.

  • Patent number: 8004761
Abstract: A stereo projection optical system includes a polarization converter, a 2-way wheel, a retarder, and an image engine. The polarization converter is configured for converting an incident light into a polarized light which have single polarization. The 2-way wheel includes a reflective region and a transmissive region. The reflective region is configured for reflecting the polarized light and the transmissive region is configured for transmitting the polarized light. The retarder is positioned to receive an emergent light from one of the reflective region and the transmissive region. The image engine is positioned to receive light output of the 2-way wheel and the retarder and configured for emitting the light output comprising spatial information. The stereo projection optical systems provide viewers three-dimensional images formed by two alternative polarized light beams whose polarizations are perpendicular to each other utilizing the 2-way wheel.

Abstract: An optical system is provided, for example for use with a display device, for varying the shape of a surface in which an image displayed by the display device is perceived. The optical system comprises first and second spaced-apart partial reflectors, at least one of which is switchable between a first non-flat shape and a second different shape, which may be flat or non-flat. The reflectors, together with polarisation optics, provide a light path such that light from the display is at least partially transmitted by the first reflector, partially reflected by the second reflector, partially reflected by the first reflector and partially transmitted by the second reflector. Light which does not follow the light path is prevented from leaving the optical system.

Abstract: A polarization conversion element having plural polarization separation sections and plural phase modulation sections is disclosed. A light flux is separated into transmission light (P polarization) and reflection light (S polarization) by being input to a polarization separation section. The reflection light reflected at the polarization separation section is output in the same direction as that of the transmission light by being reflected again at an adjacent polarization separation section at a different position from a position where a light flux is input to the adjacent polarization separation section. The phase modulation section is disposed on an optical path of the transmission light or the reflection light and output light becomes the same polarization.

  • Patent number: 7929208
Abstract: A complex polarizer system (“cross-polarizer”) including an arrangement of at least three polarizing beam splitting layers P1,P2,P3. P1 and P2 are arranged such that a beam transmitted by P1 is reflected by P2 without further polarization rotating components; P3 is arranged such that a beam reflected by P1 transmits P3 without further polarization rotating components. The congeneric processing of the two sub-beams of a beam split at P1 (both sub-beams go through a transmission and a reflection) eliminates the intrinsic asymmetries of simple polarizers with respect to purity and folding. Coupling of cross-polarizers results in efficient arrangements of systems which operate with complementarily polarized radiation, e.g. 2-channel image display systems with reflective spatial light modulators (e.g. Liquid Crystal on Silicon displays).
