  • Patent number: 10656414
Abstract: A projection arrangement for a head-up display (HUD) is presented. The arrangement has a vehicle windshield that includes an outer pane and an inner pane bonded to one another via a thermoplastic intermediate layer. The vehicle windshield has an upper edge, a lower edge, and an HUD region. The arrangement also has a projector that is aimed at the HUD region to generate a virtual image perceivable by an observer situated within an eyebox. According to one aspect, the windshield has an HUD reference point, at which a central beam running between the projector and the center of the eyebox strikes the inner pane. According to another aspect, the thickness of the thermoplastic intermediate layer in the vertical course between the upper edge and the lower edge in at least a section corresponding to the HUD region is variable according to a wedge angle.

  • Patent number: 10649214
Abstract: An optical device, including a light waves-transmitting substrate has two major surfaces and edges, optical means for coupling light into the substrate by total internal reflection, and a plurality of partially reflecting surfaces (22a, 22b) carried by the substrate. The partially reflecting surfaces (22a, 22b) are parallel to each other and are not parallel to any of the edges of the substrate, one or more of the partially reflecting surfaces (22a, 22b) being an anisotropic surface. The optical device has dual operational modes in see-through configuration. In a first mode, light waves are projected from a display source through the substrate to an eye of a viewer. In a second mode, the display source is shut off and only an external scene is viewable through the substrate.

Abstract: Provided is a vehicular display device that offers good visibility without causing a passenger to feel uncomfortable. In a bezel that includes a cover portion arranged above a display unit of a vehicular display device and a frame portion enclosing the cover portion, a front-side end portion of the cover portion is arranged at a position lower than a rear-side end portion. As a result, external light is reflected forward. Moreover, a front frame includes a reflecting plate, a semi-transparent output plate covering over the reflecting plate, and a light-collecting portion collecting external light that enters from a front into a space enclosed by the reflecting plate and the output plate. As a result, the front frame is prevented from being darkly reflected onto a front glass.

Abstract: The pupil formed by an optical apparatus is expanded by use of a beam splitter to replicate the pupil and a waveguide to further replicate the replicated pupil. An optional rotator element can rotate a portion of the light split by the beam splitter to provide consistent polarization of light in the optical apparatus. In some embodiments, the beam splitter replication expands the pupil in one direction, while the waveguide replication expands the pupil in a second direction.
