  • Patent number: 10199067
Abstract: Apparatus and method for proactively cleaning a data storage surface subjected to a mechanical disturbance. In some embodiments, data access commands are serviced by a data storage device to transfer user data between a host device and a rotatable data recording surface using a radially moveable data transducer. A media cleaning operation is scheduled and performed in response to the detection of a mechanical disturbance event externally applied to the data storage device. The media cleaning operation involves sweeping the data transducer across the data recording surface from a first radius to a second radius over a selected time duration. The entirety of the data recording surface is swept if sufficient time is available between pending commands to maintain a desired host data transfer rate. Otherwise, a partial cleaning operation is scheduled in which portions of the recording surface are successively cleaned between the servicing of the pending commands.

  • Patent number: 9542575
Abstract: In a transaction terminal device, a magnetic head module that supports a magnetic head which reads a magnetic card, and a plurality of communication antennas used for communications according to different standards are arranged at the same end within a housing. The magnetic head module includes a line-shaped metal urging member that exerts urging force to a magnetic head in a passing path direction of the magnetic card. Even though a communication antenna is arranged close to the magnetic head, a reradiated radio wave generated from the metal urging member of the magnetic head receiving a radio wave radiated from an adjacent communication antenna is reduced, and communication quality is secured. Accordingly, even though the communication antenna is arranged close to the magnetic head that reads the magnetic card, the transaction terminal device can normally complete the transaction using the read magnetic card.

  • Patent number: 8164856
Abstract: A magnetic tape apparatus includes a feeding unit for feeding a magnetic tape; a take-up unit for taking up the magnetic tape, a magnetic head disposed the downstream of the feeding unit and the upstream of the winding unit, in a traveling path of the magnetic tape from the feeding unit to the take-up unit, and having the moving magnetic tape abut to the magnetic head; a fixed guide unit disposed adjacent to the magnetic head at least in the upstream on downstream of the traveling direction of the magnetic tape traveling on the traveling path toward the magnetic head and guiding the magnetic tape to the traveling path by abutting to the magnetic tape; and a controlling unit disposed on the fixed guide unit for controlling the movement of the magnetic tape in the tape width direction. On a contact surface which abuts on the magnetic tape in the fixed guide unit, there is provided a space for excluding the air lying between the moving magnetic tape and the contact surface.

  • Patent number: 6466384
Abstract: A device for reading magnetically encoded data on a document, such as a strip of characters printed in magnetic ink along the lower edge of a check, executes a subroutine to determine whether each character, as it is read, is legitimate. This error detection may be done by comparing recognized code patterns with legitimate code patterns, or by comparing a signal representing the strength of the signal derived from the output of the magnetic read head reading the data with a predetermined level. If an error is detected, the magnetically encoded data is read and checked again, as often as need up to a predetermined number of attempts to read the data.
