Abstract: An improved actuation system for a data storage device. In one exemplary embodiment, a head retraction mechanism is movable in a head retraction direction between a head recording position and a head parked position, and an actuator remains engaged with the mechanism for movement during this movement to lessen the risk of damage. A torsional biasing member provides a biasing force on the head retraction arm. A displaceable transmission mechanism is driven by the actuator and moved in a slot in a base from a first position in which the head retraction mechanism is contacted and a second position in which an ejection mechanism is contacted. A load member is integral with the base contacts a friction member on the displaceable transmission mechanism to provide friction for this displaceable movement. The actuator is mounted between a stop member and a biasing member on the base.

Abstract: The height of the lower head is equal to that of the upper heads. A mounting plate is provided between the lower head and a carriage to provide penetration arrangement. The lower head is fixed on the carriage through the mounting plate with adhesive. The mounting plate has a rough area having small holes to provide surely adhering with accuracy. The thickness of the mounting plate is accurate because of punching (cutting) processing and is greater than that of the shutter. The width of the mounting plate is greater than that of the lower head but smaller than the shutter opening of the floppy cartridge to avoid influence to the motion of access of the magnetic head to the floppy disk. The gimbal plate for the lower magnetic head is omitted, so that the orientation of said lower magnetic head is fixed.

Abstract: A data handling apparatus is provided which includes a rotatable disk provided with at least an innermost track and an outermost track for storing data, and a disk cartridge for housing the disk. The disk cartridge is formed with an opening for exposure of a portion of the disk. The opening is substantially symmetrical with respect to a first center line extending radially of the disk. The data handling apparatus also includes a slider floatable relative to the disk, and a driving mechanism for moving the slider relative to the disk along a transfer path. This transfer path and the first center line of the opening are arranged to be non-parallel to each other.
Abstract: A disk drive has a frame for receiving and retaining a disk cartridge which includes a disk therein, such disk being rotatable about a first axis perpendicular to the frame and cartridge. An actuator is mounted to the frame and is movable a first lesser amount from a first position to a second position and a second greater amount from the first position to a third position. A retract/eject lever is also mounted to the frame, is rotatable on an axis parallel to the first axis by the actuator, and is biased to a resting position. The actuator upon being moved to the second position rotates the retract/eject lever into a head-retracting position. The actuator upon being moved to the third position rotates the retract/eject lever to the head-retracting position and then to a cartridge-ejecting position. A head assembly is mounted to the frame and is movable toward and away from the retained disk cartridge and the disk therein for reading data from/writing data to such disk.
