Abstract: Secure erase of files and unallocated sectors on storage media such that any previous data is non-recoverable. The database contains sets of data patterns used to overwrite the data on different physical media. The software programs manage the overwriting process automatically when a file has been deleted. When de-allocated sectors in the file system are pruned from a file or escaped the file deletion process also finds them. Data will never be found on deleted sectors or on pruned sectors is overwritten.

  • Patent number: 8189282
Abstract: Servo patterns for patterned media. The servo pattern includes specification of cylinder/track ID with and without a Gray code. The servo pattern space is minimized by the optimum usage of the islands. This is achieved by island allocation rules to take advantage of non-magnetic island. The island allocation also provides for easier lift-off. Logic is used to encode and decode the Gray code. Further, the Gray code is designed to stabilize the magnetic island/non-magnetic island ratio to allow for easier manufacture.

  • Patent number: 8179627
Abstract: A hard disk drive that includes a disk with data written onto a plurality of tracks, a spindle motor that rotates the disk, and a head that is coupled to the disk. The disk drive also includes a circuit that writes data onto a first writable shingle band of tracks if the first writable shingle band is adjacent to a guard band of tracks. The first writable shingle band includes a number of tracks that is a function of a head width. The guard band of tracks is capable of becoming a writable shingle band. Changing the designation of a shingle band between guard and writable creates floating guard bands. The creation of floating guard bands allows for the writing of a single band without having to move and restore adjacent tracks until reaching a fixed guard band as required in the prior art.

  • Patent number: 8169728
Abstract: To avoid the occurrence of a recording error by suppressing the influence that a magneto-static interaction acting between the pattern dots exerts on a recording process and expand a margin for recording synchronization timing lag or tracking misregistration on the pattern dot. Each pattern dot has a structure in which a plurality of parts having different magnetization reversal fields are bonded with exchange interaction in the in-plane direction of a medium, substrate. The positional relationship between the parts having different magnetization reversal fields is substantially coincident between the adjacent pattern dots, which are arranged to have a gradient of magnetization reversal field in a track direction or track transverse direction. Further, the recording is performed by adapting a gradient of recording magnetic field to the gradient of magnetization reversal field. Other methods and systems are described as well.

  • Patent number: 8169727
Abstract: This application discloses a hard disk drive and a disk employing Discrete Tracks each including a land with a groove at a first depth with sectors of each track separated by servo pattern wedges with a variable second land and a variable second groove possessing widths and a second depth for the grooves differing from the first widths and depth of the groove of the sectors. The second depth optimizes the stability of the flying height of a slider over both sectors and servo pattern wedges, removing the possibility of added vibrational modes adversely affecting the slider's normal operations of reading, writing and flying above the disk surface. This also discloses the disks and their manufacture of disk surfaces with these sector zones and servo pattern wedges.

Abstract: To synchronize a write/read frequency with media with high precision even when a write head is positioned in a different zone in a magnetic recording/reproducing device equipped with patterned media formed with writing hit patterns and having a zoned format function, a write head is positioned on a recording track in the vicinity of a boundary between zones, and the write head is positioned in a different zone from the zone in which the read head is positioned, the preamble pattern in the zone in which the read head is positioned is reproduced, a difference between frequencies of the preamble patterns of the zones is compensated to determine a write frequency used for writing data into a desired track, and then start timing for writing is determined based on a synchronization pattern obtained at the position of the read head. Other systems and methods are presented as well.

  • Publication number: 20120099217
Abstract: A length of a separator to be skipped on the storage disk is compared with a threshold. The threshold is associated with a maximum value for which a timing loop is able to be paused without causing the timing loop to have inaccurate timing. If the length is greater than the threshold, a first split sector format is assigned to the split sector and that information is recorded. In such cases, a first portion and a second portion both include synchronization information. If the length is less than the threshold, a second split sector format is assigned to the split sector and that information is recorded. In such cases, the first portion includes synchronization information and the second portion of the split sector excludes synchronization information.

  • Patent number: 8154822
Abstract: Methods, apparatuses, and systems implementing analog techniques to decode signals extracted from servo wedges of computer-readable storage media. A digital signal representing a repeatable runout (RRO) signal included in an analog signal of a computer-readable storage medium is obtained. The RRO signal includes a preamble that represents a magnitude of the RRO signal, and data. The digital signal includes a digital representation of the preamble. An estimate of the magnitude of the RRO signal is determined based on the digital representation. The estimate is compared with a specified level to generate an error signal based on a difference between the two. The provision of the error signal, for application to a subsequent RRO signal of the computer-readable storage medium, is delayed. The RRO signal is amplified prior to being represented as the digital signal to match a value established to decode the RRO signal.

  • Patent number: 8154813
Abstract: A method of making a disc for a computer disc drive and a disc made in accordance with the same. The disc includes a deposited magnetic layer of a thin film medium over a disc-shaped substrate. A master pattern having a plurality of tracks is recorded on the disc. Each track on the disc includes a plurality of magnetic islands, each having a size and magnetic properties. The size and/or magnetic properties of one or more of the magnetic islands of each track are modulated such that each track has a modulation frequency, so as to imprint a magnetic topology on the disc. The modulation frequency of each track is either a fundamental frequency or an overtone of the fundamental frequency.

Abstract: A method for physically laying out data on tape is disclosed herein. In one embodiment, such a method includes receiving a data set, wherein the data set includes S sub data sets (SDSs) of fixed size and each SDS includes N codeword interleaves (CWIs). The method further distributes the CWIs for the S SDSs across T tracks on a physical tape medium such that the distances between CWIs of the same SDS are substantially maximized on the physical tape medium. To maximize the distances, the method periodically rotates the tracks within the data set by a track rotation value R, wherein the number of tracks T is equal to 2k, and the track rotation value R is equal to 2k?1?1. A corresponding apparatus is also disclosed herein.
