  • Patent number: 10229718
Abstract: A system accesses metadata on a file system of the magnetic tape, where the metadata comprising one or more fields enabling to determine a longitudinal position (LPOS) of one or more files located on the magnetic tape. The system determines the LPOS of the one or more files located on the magnetic tape. The system determines an optimal location of the head on the magnetic tape based on computing an average value to the determined LPOS of the one or more files located on the magnetic tape and moves the head on the magnetic tape to the optimal location.

  • Publication number: 20080247077
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for optimizing fast access data storage on segmented tape media. The apparatus, in one embodiment, is configured to selectively write data to a tape storage medium. The selection module may select data for storage as one of fast access and slower access. Fast access data may be stored on the first segment, or fast access portion, of a tape storage medium to provide optimal speed for data retrieval. Slower access data may be stored on the remaining available storage space of the tape storage medium. Additionally, read requests for fast access data may be accessed more quickly than read requests for slower access data. Thus, user data may be selected and written to a tape storage medium relative to a preferred access time.

  • Patent number: 7057840
Abstract: With a magnetic record and playback device that permits rapid switching from fast forward (FF) mode or rewind (REW) mode to playback (FWD) mode, when it is necessary to switch rapidly from fast forward (FF) mode or rewind (REW) mode to playback (FWD) mode, the device is operated in a first take-up mode in which magnetic tape is wound on the rotating head drum, and when it is not necessary to switch rapidly from fast forward (FF) mode or rewind (REW) mode to playback (FWD) mode but is required to increase magnetic tape transport speed, the device is operated in a second take-up mode in which the magnetic tape is not wound on the rotating head drum, whereby it is possible to shorten the fast forward/rewind time by raising the transport speed of the magnetic tape without increasing the load on the magnetic tape or the magnetic head.

  • Publication number: 20020167745
Abstract: A method and apparatus for estimating the flyheight of an airbearing slider in a storage device using variable spindle velocity. The slider floats on an airbearing over a rotating storage disk. The storage disk includes a washboard-sequence having washboard-sections each comprising surface profile variations having a different pitch. The pitches are selected from within a range of values likely to excite an airbearing resonance of the slider as the storage disk rotates at a plurality of discrete velocities. For each of the washboard-sections and at each of the velocities, a maximum amplitude of flyheight modulation of the slider resulting from the slider floating over that washboard-section is measured as the storage disk rotates at that velocity. A determination is made of the velocity/washboard-section combination that caused the largest measured flyheight modulation.

  • Publication number: 20020009288
Abstract: Rotation of a capstan motor is detected by a frequency detector, and supplied to a CPU as a rotation detection signal CFG. The CPU derives a period of the rotation detection signal CFG, calculates an average rotational speed of the capstan motor on the basis of the derived period, derives an attenuation value of the rotational speed on the basis of the calculated average speed, and thereby sets a braking time interval. As a result, calculation of the braking time using a highly accurate zero point detection with a frequency detector of one system becomes possible. The apparatus scale can be reduced.

  • Patent number: 6282047
Abstract: A recording and/or reproducing apparatus having a plurality of tape transport modes is arranged such that, in changing a stop mode over to a desired mode through an intermediate tape transport mode among the plurality of tape transport modes, the tape is allowed to begin to travel when the process of mode change-over comes to the intermediate tape transport mode and the mode change-over process is continued further to the desired tape transport mode, while the tape is thus allowed to travel before the desired tape transport mode is attained. This arrangement substantially shortens the length of time required for mode change-over, so that the operability of the apparatus can be enhanced.

  • Patent number: 6178286
Abstract: A video recorder capstan drive motor is controlled for slow-motion, freeze-frame and similar operations by setting a rate of acceleration or braking. A speed parameter is measured during an initial acceleration phase and is compared to a predetermined desired value. Based on the result of such comparison, current to the drive motor is limited, or an existing current limitation value is increased or reduced, so as to alter the acceleration or braking and bring the tape speed more nearly to the predetermined value. A representative current value can be stored in nonvolatile storage and used for such current limitation control, for so long as conditions remain unchanged. The value can be changed when conditions change, for example due to loading of a different tape cassette or a change in operational temperature.
