Patent number: 8681453Abstract: A disk driving apparatus includes a base member, a hub member, and a fluid bearing unit. The base member has a head movement region on which a head unit is to be mounted such that a head portion of the head unit can be moved along the radial direction of a recording face in a reciprocating manner while facing the recording face of a recording disk to be mounted on the hub member, and a recessed housing portion housing the fluid bearing unit such that it surrounds at least a part of a rotor unit supported by the fluid bearing unit. Furthermore, the base member has an inhibiting wall at a boundary between the head movement region and the recessed housing portion so as to prevent a lubricant fluid from migrating toward the recording disk side.Type: GrantFiled: August 27, 2013Date of Patent: March 25, 2014Assignee: Samsung Electro-Mechanics Japan Advanced Technology Co., Ltd.Inventors: Tetsuo Kitamura, Yuji Omura, Aikra Suzuki

Patent number: 8638524Abstract: Approaches for a hard-disk drive (HDD) comprised within a sealed enclosure that is filled with a substantially helium gas are provided. The HDD may include a shroud that surrounds a majority of a perimeter of a magnetic-recording disk. The HDD may also include an upstream spoiler having one or more wings. The shape of the upstream spoiler diverts a flow of the substantially helium gas that circulates when the magnetic-recording disk is rotating from a magnetic-recording head to a plenum chamber. The plenum chamber has a mouth that allows a portion of the circulating flow of substantially helium gas to flow therein. The mouth of the plenum chamber is a gap in the shroud that is prior to the upstream spoiler in the circulating flow of the substantially helium gas. A portion of the plenum chamber is formed using a particle filter opposing the gap.Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2011Date of Patent: January 28, 2014Assignee: HGST Netherlands B.V.Inventor: Charles Allan Brown

Patent number: 8638525Abstract: A particle-capturing device configured to remove particles from a plurality of air-streams flowing within a disk enclosure of a HDD. The particle-capturing device includes a particle-capturing filter, and a filter holder. The filter has a front side and a back side. The filter holder holds the filter. The filter holder has a first opening configured to allow a first in-bound air-stream to flow in-bound through a first portion of the filter, which is disposed in the first opening, from the front side out through the back side of the filter, and a second opening configured to allow an out-bound air-stream to flow out-bound through a second portion of the filter, which is disposed in the second opening, from the back side out through the front side of the filter. A HDD and a particle-capturing system that include the particle-capturing device are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: July 24, 2012Date of Patent: January 28, 2014Assignee: HGST Netherlands B.V.Inventor: Taisuke Sugii

Patent number: 8472131Abstract: There is provided a disk drive including a disk drive base, a disk rotatably coupled to the disk drive base, and a spindle motor attached to the disk drive base and configured to support the disk for rotating the disk with respect to the disk drive base. The disk drive further includes a filter component. The filter component includes a filter housing coupled to the disk drive base, and a filter element disposed within the filter housing for filtering disk rotation induced airflow. The filter element includes a coarse section and a fine section. The coarse section has a porosity greater than a porosity of the fine section.Type: GrantFiled: September 17, 2007Date of Patent: June 25, 2013Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Jin Hui Ou-Yang, Michael G. Patent number: 8390950Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention pertain to reducing the obstruction of air flow through a bypass channel associated with a disk drive. According to one embodiment, disk drive filtering system includes a selective filtering region, an electrostatic pass-by filter, and a filter free region. The selective filtering region is disposed within a bypass channel. The electrostatic pass-by filter is disposed within the selective filtering region and is used for filtering the air that flows through the selective filtering region. The filter free region is disposed proximate to the electrostatic pass-by filter so that a substantial portion of the air is allowed to flow unobstructed through the selective filtering region.Type: GrantFiled: June 30, 2011Date of Patent: March 5, 2013Assignee: HGST Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Norbert A.
