Snubber Patents (Class 360/97.2)
  • Patent number: 10262689
Abstract: A hard disk drive with a multiple disk stack normally utilizes disk separator plates near the disk surfaces to reduce wind induced vibrations in the disks and the read/write heads. The manufacturing methods currently used to make these separator plates, metal casting and machining, or injection molded plastic, or extruding and machining, or cold forging tends to be expensive and creates unwanted weight and bulk without the desired precision. Stamping disk separator plates from metal provides exceptional dimensional control at reduced cost, but cannot readily provide the thicknesses required. Stamping and extruding the offsets, or stamping and folding the offsets, is a manufacturing process that provides the required dimensions for the offsets, and dimensional control and reduced cost.

  • Patent number: 9592549
Abstract: A hermetically sealed disc drive comprising at least one aluminum alloy housing component manufactured with a thermally directed die casting press subassembly is disclosed. In one embodiment, the thermally directed die casting press subassembly comprises a thermally directed funnel gate that is skewed to sample molten material from an off-center portion of the shot sleeve. Disc drive housing components can be manufactured by injecting an aluminum alloy slurry from the shot sleeve through the thermally directed funnel gate and the injection nozzle into the die cavity. The aluminum alloy slurry may be a thixotropic slurry comprising a uniform primary aluminum particle size in the range of approximately 50 to 80 microns. The primary aluminum particles of cast products produced according to the methodology of the present disclosure, with the aforementioned particle size distribution, are free of encapsulated eutectic at the micron scale.

  • Patent number: 9520153
Abstract: Certain exemplary aspects of the present disclosure are directed towards an apparatus including a base deck, a plurality of storage mediums (e.g., discs) and a plurality of disc separator plates. The base deck includes a sidewall forming a cavity to house the storage medium, with slots in the sidewall in which each disc separator plate extends. The disc separator plates extend into spaces between peripheral ends of adjacent ones of the storage medium. This arrangement can be used to provide rigid coupling of the separator plates, which can mitigate issues relating to vibration or shock. Further, air flow can be mitigated in this regard, such as to reduce effects upon a magnetoresistive transducer that reads data from the storage mediums.

  • Patent number: 8797677
Abstract: A disk drive including a disk having a bottom surface and a base having a first surface lying along a first plane and a second surface lying along a second plane positioned substantially parallel to the first plane. The second surface is spaced apart from the first surface and is beneath at least a portion of the bottom surface of the disk. A damper of the disk drive is located on the second surface adjacent the first surface and is configured to contact a portion of the bottom surface of the disk when the disk is deflected toward the first surface.

  • Patent number: 8553356
Abstract: A disk drive including a disk having a top surface, a cover positioned over the disk, and a disk limiter protruding from the cover toward the disk. The disk limiter is configured to contact a portion of the top surface of the disk when the disk is deflected toward the cover, and has a middle portion between two end portions. At least one portion of the disk limiter curves or slopes in a direction away from the disk.

  • Patent number: 8233232
Abstract: A data storage apparatus and associated method is provided involving a data storage disc that is rotatable around a first axis. An actuator is rotatable around a second axis to operably position a data transfer member between an innermost radial location of the data storage disc and an outermost radial storage location of the data storage disc. A snubber is supported by the actuator and has a distal edge configured as being, in relation to a reference plane including the first axis and the second axis when the actuator is rotated to position the data transfer member at the innermost radial location, arcuate along a first radius on one side of the reference plane and arcuate along a second radius different than the first radius on the other side of the reference plane.

  • Patent number: 8225655
Abstract: An altitude sensor includes a support frame and a sensor unit mounted in the support frame. The support frame has an upper shield and a lower shield. The sensor unit includes a beam and a damper. The damper is configured to move up and down in response to the air flow, which drives the beam to move up and down accordingly. Distances from the damper to the upper shield and the lower shield are less than those from the beam to upper shield and the lower shield. The altitude sensor possesses super specific properties such as unlimited sensitivity to flying height because of no size constraints and unchanged sensitivity under a changing environment, a selfprotective mechanism to resist deformation in case of an accident, easy manufacture process as well as low production cost. The present invention also discloses an altitude sensor for use in a disk drive device and a disk drive device with the altitude sensor.

  • Patent number: 6360843
Abstract: A noise damping device of a rotation driving apparatus includes a housing; and at least one rotating disk installed to be rotated by a driving source within the housing. The rotating disk and the housing are assembled to satisfy the following Equation &dgr;m<h<&dgr;m+1.5&dgr;f &dgr;m is the thickness of air layers which move from the rotation center of the rotating disk to the outside thereof and are distributed around the rotating disk when the rotating disk rotates at a normal operating speed. &dgr;f is the thickness of air layers which move from the outside of the rotating disk to the rotation center thereof and are distributed around the upper inside surface and the base surface of the housing, which face the rotating disk. h is the distance between the rotating disk and the upper inside surface or the base surface of the housing.

  • Patent number: 6214070
Abstract: The filter assembly of the present invention provides protection to a data storage disk drive assembly from contaminants, including chemical gases and particles, that either enter or exit the disk drive assembly. Incoming gases and particles pass through a label, into a hard body filter, through a diffusion filter, contact the chemical adsorbent and pass into the drive interior through a particulate filter. Outgoing gases and particles go through the apparatus in reverse. The filter assembly may be installed from the outside of the disk drive assembly at a chosen location and at any point during or after manufacturing and testing. The filter assembly is held in place by lateral extensions and an adhesive label applied to the exterior mounting surface.
