Patent number: 10796727Abstract: The present disclosure relates to using solid state deposition to selectively and strategically manage one or more properties of one or more portions of a data storage device. Material deposited via solid-state deposition can be used to prepare a surface for subsequent treatment (e.g., welding), to join two or more substrates together, and/or to seal one or more joints or surfaces to control, e.g., the humidity in the interior of a data storage device. The present disclosure also involves related data storage devices.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 2019Date of Patent: October 6, 2020Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Jerome Coffey, Sam Severson, David Lapp

Patent number: 10121518Abstract: A hermetically-sealed container for one or more data storage devices may include a base having grooves, and corresponding sidewalls disposed within each groove, with an adhesive disposed within each groove and bonding each sidewall to the base, and with gap spacing mechanisms positioned within each groove between the corresponding sidewall and the base, thereby ensuring a gap for sufficient flow of the adhesive between each sidewall and the base. The adhesive may be a liquid-based epoxy adhesive, and whereby the spacing mechanisms enable sufficient capillary action to wet all the surfaces to form a sound hermetic bond or seal between the sidewalls and the base. The container may, then, be filled with a lighter-than-air gas such as helium.Type: GrantFiled: June 21, 2017Date of Patent: November 6, 2018Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Vipin Ayanoor-Vitikkate, Toshiki Hirano, Neale M. Patent number: 9818454Abstract: A data storage device involves inner surfaces of sidewalls of a second cover overlapping with and adhesively bonded with the outer surfaces of sidewalls of an enclosure base having an uppermost top surface, where the second cover or an underlying first cover are removably adhered to the uppermost top surface of the base. The removable adhesive bond may comprise a pressure-sensitive adhesive, which can provide for reworkability during the manufacturing and testing process. The second cover-to-base sidewall bond may form a hermetic seal between the second cover and the base. Hence, a thinner base sidewall adjacent to the recording disks is enabled, leaving more space available for larger-diameter recording disks within a standard form factor, hermetically-sealed storage device, which may be filled with a lighter-than-air gas.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2016Date of Patent: November 14, 2017Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventors: Thomas R. Patent number: 9536572Abstract: Certain exemplary aspects of the present disclosure are directed towards an apparatus in which a base deck and a forged base deck cover are coupled to one another, via a weld joint, to provide a hermetically sealed cavity within. The base deck includes an outer region, and the base deck cover includes a lip that interfaces with the outer region of the base deck to provide the weld joint. Similarly, the base deck is formed by an outer region of a base deck bottom portion interfacing with a lip of the shroud to form, via welding, the base deck.Type: GrantFiled: May 16, 2014Date of Patent: January 3, 2017Assignees: Seagate Technology LLC, Cheung Woh Technologies LTDInventors: David Ray Lapp, Loh Yut Chai, Wolfgang Rosner, Law Kung Ying, Neal Frank Gunderson, Scott Vogel Mitzner, Krithika Kalyanasundaram

Patent number: 8390952Abstract: A novel information storage device is disclosed and claimed. The information storage device includes a disk drive having a disk drive top surface, a disk drive bottom surface, a disk drive periphery, and a disk drive printed circuit board. The disk drive defines a Z direction that is normal to the disk drive top surface. The disk drive defines a disk drive height measured in the Z direction from the disk drive bottom surface to the disk drive top surface. The information storage device includes a first conductive shield over the disk drive. The first conductive shield includes a peripheral capacitive flange that at least partially overlaps the disk drive periphery. The peripheral capacitive flange is separated from the disk drive periphery in a direction normal to the Z direction by a clearance. The overlap in the Z-direction is at least 5 times the clearance.Type: GrantFiled: February 22, 2008Date of Patent: March 5, 2013Assignee: Western Digital Technologies, Inc.Inventor: Wally Szeremeta

Publication number: 20120275054Abstract: A method of assembling a hard disk drive comprises steps of: sealing an interface of the base and the cover of an enclosed housing with an infrared-transmissive tape; filling the enclosed housing with a desired gaseous medium; optionally, testing the hard disk drive; and, optionally; re-working the hard disk drive. Preferably, the enclosed housing is free of rubber gasket materials between the base and the cover. A hermetically sealed hard disk drive of the invention comprises: a housing comprising a base and a cover; and disk drive components enclosed within the housing for facilitating reading and recording of data at any desired location on at least one disk contained within the housing, wherein the hard disk drive is free of rubber gasket materials between the base and the cover.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 28, 2011Publication date: November 1, 2012Applicant: ENTROTECH, INC.Inventors: James E. Patent number: 8274756Abstract: Approaches for implementing a conductive gasket comprising carbon nanotubes for deployment within a sensitive environment, such as an environment containing equipment whose operation may be affected by airborne particles or electromagnetic energy. For example, a hard-disk drive (HDD) comprises an enclosure that is formed by coupling a first component, such as a cover, to a second component, such as a base, using one or more gaskets. The one or more gaskets may be constructed using a material that includes carbon nanotubes. The composition of the material used to construct the gaskets may be selected to achieve a desired electromagnetic conductivity for the gaskets. In this way, the gaskets of the enclosure of the HDD do not render the enclosure vulnerable to external electromagnetic energy and are constructed in a manner that does not introduce any harmful airborne contaminants within the protective enclosure of the HDD.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 2009Date of Patent: September 25, 2012Assignee: HGST Netherlands B.V.Inventors: Albert Wallash, Ravinder Ajmani, John Contreras, Ryan Davis

Publication number: 20120176700Abstract: In a rotating device, a housing includes a cylindrical outer surface facing an inner surface of a through hole and a guiding surface arranged on the underside of the outer surface, the diameter of the guiding surface being less than the diameter of the outer surface. Glue has an interface in an end space. In at least a part of the end space where the glue does not exist, conductive resin seamlessly is applied from the guiding surface to the inner surface of the through hole. With regard to a portion of the inner surface of the through hole that radially faces the guiding surface, the length, in the axial direction, of the portion that touches the conductive resin is greater than the length, in the axial direction, of the portion that touches the glue.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2011Publication date: July 12, 2012Applicant: ALPHANA TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD.Inventors: Naoki SHINJI, Hirotake NISHINO, Akira MURAMATSU, Yoshio KUROKAWA
