Gasket Patents (Class 360/99.22)
  • Patent number: 9916872
Abstract: A data storage system assembly includes a hermetically-sealed enclosure, a double-barrier sealing system comprising first and second sealing members spaced from each other, and a vacuum source that operates in the space between sealing members to generate a lower pressure in the space than in the enclosure. A lighter-than-air gas may be enclosed in the enclosure, and a plurality of non-hermetically-sealed data storage devices may be housed within the enclosure. Air, humidity, and other contaminants may be intercepted by the vacuum system rather than leak into and pollute the sealed internal environment of the storage system enclosure.

  • Patent number: 9440424
Abstract: Embodiments generally relate to methods for forming and dismantling a hermetically sealed chamber. In one embodiment, the method comprises using room temperature laser bonding to create a hermetic seal between a first element and a second element to form a chamber. A bond interface of the hermetic seal is configured to allow the hermetic seal to be opened under controlled conditions using a release technique. In one embodiment, the chamber is formed within a microfluidic chip and the chamber is configured to hold a fluid. In one embodiment a chip comprises a first hermetic seal bonding first and second elements to create a first chamber and a second hermetic seal bonding third and fourth elements to create a second chamber encompassing the first chamber. The first hermetic seal may be broken open independently of the second hermetic seal by the application of a mechanical or thermal technique.

  • Patent number: 8792205
Abstract: A disk drive includes a disk drive housing having a hole therethrough. A disk is enclosed within the disk drive housing, and is rotatably attached to the disk drive housing. A seal covers the hole through the disk drive housing. The seal includes a conductive layer, a primary dielectric layer, and a gasket layer. The conductive layer has a covered surface region and an exposed planar surface region. The exposed planar surface region is lacking a dielectric coating disposed thereon. The primary dielectric layer includes an adhesive coating disposed between the primary dielectric layer and the covered surface region. The gasket layer includes first and second adhesive gasket layer sides and a gasket opening disposed through the gasket layer. The gasket opening is disposed about the hole in the disk drive housing, with the first adhesive gasket layer attached to the disk drive housing.

  • Patent number: 8705201
Abstract: A novel information storage device is disclosed and claimed. The information storage device includes a device housing with a generally rectangular bay to accommodate a disk drive. The generally rectangular bay includes a base portion and a plurality of side portions. The information storage device further includes a damping insert sheet disposed between the disk drive and the base portion. The damping insert sheet has a plurality of elastomeric cushions, for example with a cushion thickness in the range 0.5 mm to 10 mm, and a spanning sheet, for example having a sheet thickness in the range 0.02 mm to 0.35 mm. Each of the plurality of elastomeric cushions is attached to the spanning sheet. Each of the plurality of elastomeric cushions contacts and is compressed between the generally rectangular bay and the disk drive.

  • Patent number: 8400730
Abstract: A multi-stage gasket having a multi-stage structure constituted by multiple kinds of gasket materials and being used by holding between a cover plate and a base plate, the multi-stage gasket having contactness of a gasket as the lowermost layer to the cover plate or the base plate in contact with the gasket that is higher than contactness of a gasket as the uppermost layer to the cover plate or the base plate in contact with the gasket. A gasket can be provided that provides good reworkability of a cover plate and a base plate of a hard disk device, provides sufficient adhesiveness of the gasket to a cover plate and a base plate even when used in a high humidity and temperature environment, and is prevented from being toppled sideways or peeled off even when applied with a force in an oblique direction.

  • Patent number: 8274756
Abstract: Approaches for implementing a conductive gasket comprising carbon nanotubes for deployment within a sensitive environment, such as an environment containing equipment whose operation may be affected by airborne particles or electromagnetic energy. For example, a hard-disk drive (HDD) comprises an enclosure that is formed by coupling a first component, such as a cover, to a second component, such as a base, using one or more gaskets. The one or more gaskets may be constructed using a material that includes carbon nanotubes. The composition of the material used to construct the gaskets may be selected to achieve a desired electromagnetic conductivity for the gaskets. In this way, the gaskets of the enclosure of the HDD do not render the enclosure vulnerable to external electromagnetic energy and are constructed in a manner that does not introduce any harmful airborne contaminants within the protective enclosure of the HDD.
