The lighting unit (1) includes lamps (3), which are in thermal contact with a heat-conducting wall (5) of a hollow box (6). The lamps (3) make thermal contact with the heat-conducting wall (5) on the side opposite the light-emitting side of the lighting unit (1). The hollow box (6) is provided with a rear wall (8) that runs essentially parallel to the heat-conducting wall (5) and has openings (9) which are distributed across the area thereof. A top sidewall (10) and a bottom sidewall (11) are provided with additional openings (12, 13) in zones that lie closer to the rear wall (8). Preferably, the sidewalls do not have openings in zones located closer to the heat-conducting wall (5) than the additional openings (12, 13).

  • Patent number: 7021799
Abstract: Light-emitting element arrays having aligned LEDs are fixed to a stand integrally formed with a heat sink. An attachment surface of the stand is formed with V-shaped grooves working as reflection planes for improving irradiation efficiency. The arrays are separated from printed-circuit boards to be bonded therewith by wires. The array is placed at the bottom of the groove. The printed-circuit board is placed on a step formed at a wall of the groove. Since the array is separated from the resinous printed-circuit board having inferior heat conductance, high efficiency of heat radiation is obtained. Further, since the array is disposed close to the wall, unevenness of intensity distribution of the LEDs is prevented from being enlarged.

  • Patent number: 7015632
Abstract: The present invention relates to a light source device including discharge tubes that emit light by discharging in a thin atmosphere, a method of producing the light source device, and a display apparatus in which the light source device is employed. This light source device includes discharge tubes and a heat conductive member that is brought into contact with the neighboring area of the electrodes of the discharge tubes so as to locally cool down the neighboring area of the electrodes. In the light source device, a low heat conductivity member having lower heat conductivity than the heat conductive member is interposed between the heat conductive member and the discharge tubes. With such a structure, the luminance in the entire light source device can be increased and made uniform, and the reliability of the light source device can be increased accordingly.

Abstract: A circuit board assembly with an array of closely spaced circuit components mounted thereon. The board has a pattern of conductive strips on both front and back faces and the strips are connected through the board by thermally conductive vias. The circuit components are mounted on one side of the board and a layer of thermally conductive, double-sided adhesive tape is laid over the conductive strips on both faces of the board. Heat sinks are then applied against the tape on both sides of the board to conduct heat from the board through the tape.

  • Patent number: 6880952
Abstract: A compact, energy-efficient extensible illumination source combines the reliability advantages of light emitting diodes (LEDs) with the brightness of conventional lighting. High reliability of the LEDs provides trouble-free operation over a long hour lifetime. This high-output light source can be used in direct lighting applications or for backlighting for translucent materials. The illumination source includes LED printed wire board segments that may be configured to form a light line of any length. The segments are mounted on a inner mounting base which also serves as a first stage heat sink for the LEDs. The illumination source includes a linear mirror for reflecting radiant energy away from the LEDs to produce a uniform linear illumination pattern. A window provides mechanical protection for the LEDs and may be used for diffusing or filtering light from the LEDs. An integral base in contact with the inner mounting base also serves as a heat sink and provides structural support for the illumination source.

  • Patent number: 6846096
Abstract: The present invention discloses a partition is incorporated into the case of the projector so as to separate the optical system and the circuitry system. A circuitry fan is used to cool the circuitry system. The optical system is cooled by a suction fan. The cooling air is drawn in by the suction fan and directed to a lamp case through an air duct so as to cool a burner within the lamp case. The heat air is then directed to manifold duct. A first outlet of the manifold duct is directed through an exhausting duct to an exhausting fan. The other outlet of the manifold duct is directed to the circuitry fan. As a result, the heated air is discharged out of the case by those two cooling fans so as to evenly discharge the heated airflow from the lamp case, reducing the heat load of the fan and prolongs the lifespan of the fan.
