Abstract: A high efficiency lighting system (100) is described that has a small etendue. This can be used, for example, for backlighting a display device such as a liquid crystal display (LCD), projection displays, as well as for general lighting purposes. A portion of the light from a light emitting device die (101) falls onto a fluorescent material (105,106), such as phosphor. Dichroic mirrors (107,109) prevent the light generated by the fluorescent material to return to the light-emitting device. The mirrors may also provide collimation of the generated light and the remainder of the light from the light-emitting device. In this way a high efficiency system is realized because little or no generated light is absorbed and the generated light does not have to travel through a fluorescent material layer and thus has a high chance to go in the desired direction.

Abstract: An illumination system and a projection device comprising the same are provided. The projection device further comprises an imaging system. The illumination system comprises a first light source, a dichroic element and a wheel plate. The dichroic element comprises a first dichroic portion and a second dichroic portion. The first light source provides a first wave band light, which is reflected to the wheel plate by the first dichroic portion. When being projected onto a wave band transforming area of the wheel plate, the first wave band light will be transformed into a second wave band light by the wave band transforming area and then emits through the first dichroic portion and the second dichroic portion. When being projected onto a reflecting area of the wheel plate, the first wave band light will be reflected by the reflecting area to emit through the second dichroic portion.

Abstract: A light source device includes a light source unit emitting light of a first wavelength and a wavelength converting element converting light of the first wavelength into light of a second wavelength. An external mirror transmits light of the second wavelength toward an emission destination and reflects light of the first wavelength to resonate between the light source unit and the external mirror. A wavelength separating section transmits light converted from the first wavelength to the second wavelength while traveling from the external mirror to the light source unit and reflects light of the first wavelength in order to separate the different wavelength light. A turnback section reflects light of the second wavelength separated by the wavelength separating section toward the emission destination. In addition, the wavelength separating section reflects light of the first wavelength from the light source unit to travel toward the wavelength converting element.

  • Publication number: 20120140462
Abstract: Optical elements having components made from high refractive index materials (RI?1.6) and lamp assemblies incorporating such elements. Various optical elements, such as total internal reflection lenses, can be fabricated from materials having a higher index of refraction than materials typically used in such elements. The compact optical elements have at least one internal reflection surface that directs radiant energy (e.g., light) from a receiving end to a transmitting end. By using a high refractive index material, a lens can be fabricated that directs a greater portion of the light emitted from a source into the lens toward the transmitting end of the lens. Thus, less of the light spills out of the lens at a surface where emission is not intended, reducing the number of lossy bounces needed to direct the light in a particular direction.
