  • Patent number: 7070312
Abstract: A lamp unit has a semiconductor light emitting chip 24a and a translucent member 22 which subjects light emitted from the chip 24a to be reflected by front surface 22a and then by rear surface 22b to exit from the front surface 22a. Chip 24a is arranged to face forward such that a lower end thereof crosses an optical axis Ax of the lamp unit 20 at right angles. The front surface 22a of the translucent member 22 is formed from a plane orthogonal to the optical axis Ax, and an optical axis region 22a1 of the front surface is subjected to mirror surface treatment. A rear surface 22b of the translucent member 22 is formed using a paraboloid of rotation whose focal point is a position having symmetry with an illumination center of the chip 24a. The rear surface is subjected to mirror surface treatment.

Abstract: An improved optical assembly includes a reflector/refractor device and a reflector collar provided for enhanced directional illumination control. The reflector/refractor has a predefined shape and has a plurality of reflector/refractor prisms on an exterior body surface for reflecting and refracting light. A light source is disposed within the reflector/refractor substantially along a central vertical axis of the reflector/refractor. The reflector collar supports the reflector/refractor and attaches the reflector/refractor to a luminaire ballast. The reflector collar has a predetermined contour and a plurality of reflector impressions formed into the predetermined contour. The predetermined contour and the plurality of reflector impressions provide directional illumination control for the optical assembly.

  • Patent number: 6685342
Abstract: A prism unit has transmitting/totally-reflecting surfaces which cross each other, formed using at least one prism. Light emanating from a light source falls on the prism unit. The light is transmitted or totally reflected from the surfaces according to an angle of incidence at which the light falls on the prism unit. Transmitted light is radiated forwards, while totally-reflected light is directed laterally. A reflecting member is located laterally in order to cover the prism unit, whereby light totally reflected laterally by the prism unit is reflected forwards. In order to constitute the transmitting/totally—reflecting surfaces, a first air layer and a second air layer are formed in the prism unit so to have a substantially uniform width and oppose each other with a plane, which contains a glowing member of the light source and extends forwards, between them.

Abstract: A lens comprises a bottom surface, a reflecting surface, a first refracting surface obliquely angled with respect to a central axis of the lens, and a second refracting surface extending as a smooth curve from the bottom surface to the first refracting surface. Light entering the lens through the bottom surface and directly incident on the reflecting surface is reflected from the reflecting surface to the first refracting surface and refracted by the first refracting surface to exit the lens in a direction substantially perpendicular to the central axis of the lens. Light entering the lens through the bottom surface and directly incident on the second refracting surface is refracted by the second refracting surface to exit the lens in a direction substantially perpendicular to the central axis of the lens. The lens may be advantageously employed with LEDs, for example, to provide side-emitting light-emitting devices. A lens cap attachable to a lens is also provided.

Abstract: A light source for a flat panel display or a luminare includes a tubular enclosure having a linear slit in which is positioned a lens structure which may be a cylindrical rod lens or a plurality of ball lenses. The lens, whether a rod or ball structure, has an opaque white reflective strip or coating facing inward of the tubular enclosure, thereby defining two narrow slit openings through which the light can be projected into the lens structure and into an associated waveguide.

Abstract: A lighting device for installation in a substantially plane surface, comprising at least one lamp device that emits light essentially in a light direction which forms an angle with an exit face of a light refracting means in the lamp device. The lamp device comprises a light source that emits light towards an incident face of the light refracting means, where the light refracting means has a longitudinal direction coincident with the light direction, and where the exit face is approximately parallel to the substantially plane surface. The exit face is set a slight angle of inclination relative to the substantially plane surface, the angle and the angle of inclination in combination causing light from the light source to be brought to an emergent angle above the face that satisfies pre-set requirements for light intensity close to the surface.
