Abstract: A device and a method for uniformly illuminating transparent or opaque objects while confining the illumination to those objects. The device consists of a radiation source and a transparent block. The device exploits total internal reflection to ensure that radiation introduced to the block by the radiation source propagates only within the block except where the block is in contact with the object to be illuminated. Where there is contact with the object, some of the radiation enters transparent objects, illuminating them from within or is diffusely reflected from opaque objects.

Abstract: A flood light includes a lamp that is located at a focus of a reflecting mirror having a reflecting surface whose cross-section is oval and partially arcuate. A concave lens having negative refracting power is disposed between first and second foci about which an elliptical reflecting surface of the reflecting mirror is disposed. Some light rays from the lamp pass directly from the lamp through the lens while other rays from the lamp are reflected by the mirror before passing through the lens. Generally speaking, on the upstream side of the lens, the reflected rays enter the lens outboard of the rays that pass directly from the lamp to the lens. This construction provides a small flood light that has a high optical output, and effectively uses bundles of rays emitted from the lamp to produce a luminous intensity distribution desirable as light for range finding.

This newly designed lamp is ideally suited as a source of illumination for beam lights of the type employing reflective surfaces to produce a beam of light. The at least one chip is encased in at least one envelope surrounding the chip, with the envelope extending from a first position below the position of the at least one chip to a second position above the chip position. The second position of the envelope forms a lens in from of the at least one chip with the surface of the lens being configured and positioned relative to the ship such that a substantially uniform portion of light emitted from the chip is reflected off of the surface.

Abstract: A light collector for directing light to a concentrated area on a target surface such as for use with a linear LED array used as an erase lamp in an electrophotographic printer. The collector includes a compound cylinder lens supported by a pair of reflecting members. The reflecting members reflect light rays from the LED array to the cylinder lens. The cylinder lens includes a lower surface for capturing the reflected light rays and a tongue extending from the lower surface for capturing light rays directly from the LED array. The cylinder lens directs and concentrates the captured light rays in a narrow line on a target surface. A plurality of cross-ribs extend between the first and second reflecting members to specularly reflect light beams from the LED array.

Abstract: To provide a back light unit, a liquid display, and a method for manufacturing a light guide plate, in which the occurrence of bright lines can be diminished. An incoming surface 11a of a transparent light guide plate 11 is machined into a smooth surface S to correct a manufacturing tolerance during injection molding in order to form an edge portion E into a designed shape. To effectively reduce occurrence of bright lines, the edge portion E preferably has a curvature of radius or a chamfer dimension of 140 [&mgr;m] or smaller. The transparent light guide plate 11, a diffusion sheet 5, and a prism sheet 12 configure a back light unit 10 for a liquid crystal display.

The first optical unit is arranged to direct light from the light source to an object, and has a lens part disposed a middle portion of the first optical unit and having such an optical power that each of both lens surfaces thereof has a positive refractive power to cause diverging light from the light source to exit in a light-collected state, and reflective surfaces disposed on both sides of the lens part and arranged to reflect light from the light source toward the object. The second optical unit is disposed on a side nearer to the object than the first optical unit and having a plurality of lens parts. Abstract: A faceted surface has first and second facets which deflect respective first and second light beams to produce first sub-beams which alternate with second sub-beams. The faceted surface may be a reflector having first facets at 120° to second facets for mixing light beams which are incident at 120° to each other. 100% of reflected sub-beams from each source alternate with 100% of sub-beams from the other source. The faceted surface may also be a refractor which is part of a transparent block having two parallel faceted surfaces. A first refractive surface refracts parallel light beams to produce diverging beams which are each split into spaced apart sub-beams by the second refractive surface. 50% of refracted sub-beams originating from each source alternate with 50% of refracted sub-beams of each adjacent source.
