  • Patent number: 8602611
Abstract: Lighting fixtures using light-emitting devices are disclosed with heat sinks that are both decorative and functional by providing heat dissipation for the light-emitting devices used therein. A lighting fixture can contain an insert portion for removably attaching to a heat sink. A light-emitting device can be mechanically coupled and attached to the heat sink while simultaneously electrically coupling and connecting the light-emitting device. A lamp shade can be secured to the heat sink by attachably engaging with a retaining portion of the insert portion. The fixture comprises a lamp shade wherein at least a portion of a body of the heat sink forming a decorative portion can extend outward from the lamp shade.

  • Patent number: 8556477
Abstract: A light fixture mounting post includes an upper threaded portion for attaching the post to a light shade and a lower portion having a multiplicity of sequential taper threaded segments for attaching light fixtures to the post. The upper threaded portion has left handed threads, and an O-ring and a shaped rubber washer residing between a post nut and the shade. A post flange limits the insertion depth of the upper threaded portion through the shade. The taper threaded segments include right handed pipe threads for tightly engaging the light fixtures and reduced thickness spaces separating the taper threaded segments allowing easy shortening of the lower portion. An unthreaded shoulder adjacent to one of the reduced thickness spaces lengthens the separation of the taper threaded segments below the unthreaded shoulder from the taper threaded segments above the unthreaded shoulder which facilitates the attachment of known light fixtures.

Abstract: A light-emitting diode (LED) system to retrofit a light fixture has a frame configured to be installed under an existing light fixture and a LED lighting assembly couplable to the frame. In one example, the frame is formed as a plurality of rails having a flange to be installed between the light fixture and a grid member of a ceiling suspension system. The frame may be installed without removal of the existing light fixture. The LED lighting assembly includes an LED array and an optical waveguide for dispersing light from the LED array. The LED system maintains a thin profile, enabling it to retrofit existing light fixtures. Installation time is reduced, thereby reducing labor costs, while the LED lighting provides more light with less energy.

  • Patent number: 8491155
Abstract: A solid state lighting system and components therefor are provided that are modular, rugged, reliable and energy efficient. Heat dissipation with respect to solid state light fixtures may be addressed by inverting the solid state lights on a circuit board to project light through apertures in the circuit board, so that heat need not be dissipated through the circuit board itself. In addition, solid state light fixtures may be coupled to one another along with a power supply in modular strands that incorporate AC/DC multi-wire cords that carry both AC and DC signals. Additional functionality, such as support for multiple lighting modes, may also be included, e.g., to support blackout lighting in addition to standard lighting. The multiple lighting modes may be selected, for example, by adjusting an electrical parameter of the AC power signal supplied to the lighting system, e.g., by rectifying the AC power signal.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for providing sources of light, or mechanical and/or electrical connections for light sources, via a grid system of a suspended ceiling. All or a portion of a grid system for a suspended ceiling may be configured to support the generation of light. Lighting units may be coupled to various portions of the grid system in a removable and modular fashion, so as to be completely or substantially recessed above the ceiling surface, or as pendant components hanging below the ceiling surface. Lighting interface components of the grid system also may be configured to facilitate significant thermal dissipation from lighting units. In one exemplary implementation, one or more LED-based lighting units may be coupled to one or more lighting interface components of the grid system so as to provide controllable multi-color and/or essentially white light.

Abstract: This invention is directed to a lampholder for receiving a non-incandescent lamp having a 2-pin base. A surface mountable member for receiving the lamp and which has no voltage transforming circuitry is disclosed. Each pin of the lamp has an enlarged cylindrical shaped end attached to a shaft of reduced diameter. The surface mountable member has two keyhole shaped apertures, each of which has a large circular end aperture and an arc shaped slot for receiving and securely holding the pins of the lamp to the surface mountable member. The circular aperture of each keyhole shaped aperture has a diameter which is slightly larger than the diameter of the enlarged cylindrical end of the lamp pin, and the arc shaped slot has a width that is both smaller than the diameter of the cylindrical end of the lamp pin and wider than the diameter of the shaft of the pin. The enlarged ends of the pins of the lamp, when located in the arc shaped slots, prevent the lamp from being pulled out of the surface mountable member.
