Abstract: Output of each sensor arrangement is supplied to an ECU through a communication bus line. A value of a turning radius of a vehicle, which is used for adjusting directions of optical axes of swivel lights, is computed based on the output of each sensor arrangement in the ECU. When a majority of the computed values fall within a predetermined allowable range, the majority of the computed values are determined as normal, and the remaining of the computed values is determined as abnormal. The communication bus line is determined as abnormal when none of the output from the sensor arrangements is obtained. An optical axis control angle is computed based on the normal computed values and is used to drive actuators to adjust directions of the optical axes of the swivel lights.

The light emitting source is operable to illuminate selectively between a first lighting characteristic and a second lighting characteristic. The light emitting source is adapted to be actuated at the first lighting characteristic in response to a first signal operatively generated by the sensor indicating the first set of conditions. The light emitting source is also adapted to be actuated at the second lighting characteristic in response to a second signal operatively generated by the sensor indicating the second set of conditions.

Abstract: A switch assembly module for controlling operation of a vehicle lamp includes a photocell integrated within the module housing to allow a controller to automatically switch the lamp on or off depending on detected ambient level. A manual switch is provided on a faceplate of the housing to allow disabling of the automatic operation feature. A manual switch can also be provided to allow variable dimming of the lamp. Integration of the photocell into the switch assembly module eliminates the need for separate instrument panel wiring to the photocell, while reducing wiring harness complexity by allowing the same harness and connector to be used with a module not having the photocell integrated therein.

Abstract: In such a state that a self-vehicle runs along a guide route (YES in S6), if an intersection is not present in a forward part for a while (NO in S8), beam control is carried out in a navigation associating mode corresponding to the guide route (S9). Consequently, beam irradiation is properly carried out over a road provided ahead of the vehicle without requiring a complicated calculation for the beam control. On the other hand, if the intersection is present in the forward part of the guide route (YES in S8), the beam control is carried out in a normal mode (a control mode other than the navigation associating mode) (S10). Consequently, even if the self-vehicle gets out of the guide route when passing through the intersection, the beam control itself is performed continuously and the beam irradiation is properly executed over the road provided ahead of the vehicle.

Abstract: A motor vehicle lamp assembly having a lamp bulb for emitting light and a bulb housing having a light transmissive portion for transmitting light from the lamp bulb to an illumination zone. The housing is coated with a coating material which covers a selected region of the light transmissive portion of the housing. The coating material is electrically energized to alter an amount of light transmitted from the bulb to the illumination zone. A drive circuit electrically coupled to the coating material energizes the coating material to control a light output from the lamp assembly. Alternate materials are disclosed. One of the materials renders the material more light transmissive when activated with a current and a second of the materials renders the material less light transmissive when activated with a current.

Abstract: The disclosed safety light is designed to provide automatic operation for lights placed on elastic tires. Wheel (100) comprises a hub (84), a urethane tire (88), and a safety light circuit molded into the urethane tire and hub. The safety light circuit is formed on a circuit board which holds electrical components comprising, a battery (B1), deformation-activated switch (SW1), photo sensor and delay(CDS1, D1, R1, R2, Q1, C1), and illumination devices (LED1 and LED2). Battery(B1) provides electromotive power to operate all circuitry, with switch (SW1), photo sensor CDS1, and illumination devices (LEDp1 and LED2) placed substantially in series electrically. Switch (SW1) is designed to conduct current when a change in deformation or a specified rate-of-change in deformation of the tire material is detected. The photocell (CDS1) signals the photo-sensor to conduct current when photocell (CDS1) detects a sufficiently low level of light.

  • Patent number: 6481876
Abstract: A lighting system for vehicles including a plurality of dimmer lamps, a steering sensor, and an electronic control unit (ECU). The dimmer lamps are provided at the front of a vehicle in its moving direction, and their radiated ranges differ from each other and their quantity of light also varies, according to the steering angle as sensed by the steering sensor. The ECU changes the combination of radiated ranges of the lamps to realize light distribution control ahead and sideways of a vehicle by turning-on/off the lamps, as well as changes the quantity of light of each lamp according to the wheel steering angle. The ECU sequentially turns on the lamps according to the steering angle and increases the corresponding quantity of radiation in proportion to the magnitude of the steering angle. Thus, the radiated range gradually expands in the vehicle's turning direction and its brightness gradually increases.
