  • Patent number: 8602567
Abstract: Multi-color light sources are mixed in a recycling housing to achieve high light output. Light from each color light source is multiplexed and a portion of the mixed light passes through an output aperture in the light pipe and a portion light is recycled back, for example, by a shaped reflective surface and/or a reflective coating adjacent the aperture. In one embodiment, the light is directed back from the output side of the housing to an input light source having the same color. In another embodiment, the light is directed back from the output side of the housing to a coating designed to reflect that color. The reflected light is then reflected back toward the output aperture and a portion of that reflected light is again reflected toward the input and impacts the original source for that color light. In this way, light theoretically recycles infinitely.

Abstract: A new class of optical source having a truncated waveguide is provided, where a guided section of a light generating medium is terminated at an angle at a predetermined distance away from one end facet of the waveguide, thereby leaving a section for unguided light propagation. A truncated waveguide when implemented in combination with waveguide tilt, effective front facet reflectivity is reduced significantly to eliminate unwanted facet reflections. By extending electrical pumping in the unguided propagation section, the light in the unguided path propagates to a corresponding end facet without attenuation. The reflected light propagates freely without being intercepted by the waveguide. The principles are incorporated in different types of light generating and amplifying medium including a “double-pass” gain medium for designing optical sources having significantly high output power and negligibly small spectral modulation arising from unwanted facet reflections.

The invention is advantageous in that the lighting device provides both a decorative look and a functional illumination, and is still energy-efficient since the light emitted from the second light emitting element is directly emitted from the light emitting element without unnecessary energy-loss.

Abstract: Optical systems for focused light emission, which can be used as full color-capable pixels in grid assemblies, such as variable message signs and outdoor electronic display boards. The optical systems may include a light source that is a commercially available full-color LED in SMD design having a red, a green, and a blue LED crystal, which may be disposed at an inlet surface of a light-guiding rod having a constant cross-section and a jacket surface made of planes adjacent to each other at sharp edges. The light-guiding rod thereby captures the light substantially completely and completely mixes the different colors and brightnesses efficiently without scattering. The light output of the light-guiding rod lies at the focus of a convergent lens, which focuses the exiting light.
