  • Patent number: 9514537
Abstract: What is disclosed is a system and method for adaptively reconstructing a depth map of a scene. In one embodiment, upon receiving a mask identifying a region of interest (ROI), a processor changes either a spatial attribute of a pattern of source light projected on the scene by a light modulator which projects an undistorted pattern of light with known spatio-temporal attributes on the scene, or changes an operative resolution of a depth map reconstruction module. A sensing device detects the reflected pattern of light. A depth map of the scene is generated by the depth map reconstruction module by establishing correspondences between spatial attributes in the detected pattern and spatial attributes of the projected undistorted pattern and triangulating the correspondences to characterize differences therebetween. The depth map is such that a spatial resolution in the ROI is higher relative to a spatial resolution of locations not within the ROI.

Abstract: A fiber optic display device reciprocates fiber optics to create decorative optical fiber light displays. The device can include one or more optical fibers contained at one end by a holding member and left suspended freely at the other end. The holding member and optical fibers are functionally attached about a pivot point axis that is across the longitudinal axis of the fibers and the holding member, to a housing. A light source can be affixed to either the holding member or the housing, opposite the freely suspended optical fiber ends, and is oriented to expose and illuminate the optical fibers. A drive means causes the holding member and optical fibers to reciprocate back and forth about the pivot point axis of the holding member.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is an optical device having a light source, a viscoelastic lightguide and a retroreflective film suitable for retroreflecting light. Light from the light source enters the viscoelastic lightguide and is transported within the lightguide by total internal reflection. The transported light is extracted from the lightguide and retroreflected at a structured surface of the retroreflective film. The optical device may have a “front lit” or a “back lit” configuration depending on the relative positioning of the lightguide and the retroreflective film. The retroreflective film may include prismatic retroreflective sheeting, holographic film or film structured with diffraction gratings. The optical device may be used, for example, as a sign or marking, a license plate assembly, a tail light assembly for vehicles, a security laminate for protection of documents against tampering, or an illumination device.

Abstract: Provided are an optical element and a light-emitting device with which the illuminated area can be expanded in spite of a small light-emitting area, and that also enable the device to be downsize. The light-emitting device is equipped with sheet-like light-guide sections (a first light-guide section and a second light-guiding section) for guiding light, and a light-emitting member for emitting light. The second light-guide section has a prism section with a saw tooth-like cross-section for changing the direction of the light guided to one of its surfaces. In the prism section, the angle of incidence at which parallel light guided to the second light guide section enters reflective surface of saw teeth at positions away from the LED is set to be greater than the angle of incidence (?) at which the light enters the reflective surface of the saw teeth at the side toward the LED.

Abstract: Described is an illumination structure suitable for a keyboard light of a portable computer. An example illumination structure includes a transparent acrylic board, a light source, and a light guide. The acrylic board may have a front surface and a rear surface, each of which is flat. The light source is provided at a tilt angle q at which an optical axis is almost at a critical angle with respect to the rear surface of the acrylic board. The light guide is located between the light source and the rear surface. Further, light rays radiated from the light source are refracted by the light guide and the optically-transparent panel, and travel towards the front surface, so as to illuminate the surface.

Abstract: In one embodiment, a solid-state luminaire has a strip of high power LEDs, where each LED emits light into an optical coupler. Light from the optical coupler is then coupled into a light guide. Light coupled into the light guide is mixed and guided to an exit aperture of the light guide. An optical extractor proximate the exit aperture of the light guide redirects light outward, which is optionally redirected generally downward by a secondary reflector that extends outwardly along the length of the light guide. The secondary reflector may be configured to create a variety of light-emission patterns. The luminaire may be hung from a ceiling, in track lighting, used as a pendant or pedestal fixture, or in other applications.
